Salem sells KLTY, six other CCM stations to EMF

What will they do with KYDA HD2 channel (KLOVE) after Friday?

I tend to think that's the old adage involving a tree and a forest.

Good chance K-Love will do something different with it at some point, but it might not necessarily be in a rush for the reason I mentioned above.

Do we have an idea of when K-LOVE will take over? I'm sure the Format Change website will have a recording of it, but I'd like to hear when the K-LOVE borg assimilates 94.9 .

1) KLTY is heritage and already features a great corny KLOVE (brand) acronym (K Love Texas Y’all).
Yeah, that's what they're saying KLTY stood for -- but it didn't start out that way.

In the original incarnation of KLTY back in the 80s, KLTY was "The Light". I remember the jingles that sang "Turn on the Light, KLTY".

That station bit the dust when 94.9 was flipped to Top 40 as KHYI, Y-95, but within a couple years the CCM format was back on a different frequency (94.1) under different call letters (KOJO) and with different ownership (Marcos Rodriguez). Rodriguez eventually was able to get the KLTY call letters, but I don't think that he ever used "The Light" as the station name, so that name was permanently gone. Eventually, he sold the station and it ended up with Salem Broadcasting. Salem first moved the station to 100.7, then eventually to 94.9, restoring the format and call letters to the frequency at which it had originated.

And to answer Charles' question about why KLTY was mixing in 90s and 2000s music in its final days, I'm sure that is just a way of saying goodbye to their longtime listeners who heard that music on the station when that music was new. When you've only got a few days left, I'd say it is okay to break format in ways that recognize the legacy or history of a station. After all, it's not like they need to be worried about playing music that is "outside the advertising demographic" anymore.

I've never been a fan of CCM music, but I do think that this station has been a significant one in the DFW radio market over the years -- it was for many years one of the most successful commercial CCM stations in the country, and it frequently ranked as one of the top stations locally.

KLTY wrapped up by having many of their on-air personalites doing prerecorded farewells & the last song played was "Friends 2003" by Michael W. Smith. And much like WFSH in Atlanta an hour ago & in the past when the Fish Nashville ended, they played a promo leading into K-Love acknowedging the personalities past & present of KLTY & then sign in with the same song as when WFSH went to Air1 "Praise" by Elevation Worship.

But then, KLTY joined the K-Love feed with "The Prodigal" by Josiah Queen.

That's pretty impressive that they got the RDS to change almost immediately. I've seen a lot of format changes where the RDS doesn't change for a week or more.
I’m guessing they’re still running out of the former Salem KLTY studios for now and the K-Love feed is just potted up on the board. K-Love is currently streaming through the KLTY website and that’s part of the reason why I think this is what’s happening. I’m also sure they’re working on getting the actual K-LOVE equipment in place, as a few stations that share the same tower with 94.9 were on backups last night.

It’s really easy to update the RDS and PAD info, but there’s no Artist/Title info yet. HD2 and HD3 are still Salem stations.

But you’re right, some stations are really bad at updating RDS. One in my hometown in Illinois didn’t change the name on their RDS for 2 years!! Audacy here still hasn’t updated the PAD info on 105.3 HD3 here, as it still says “CBS Sports”, almost a year into their name change.

The "40 years in North Texas" counts the KOJO 94.1 days, since the KLTY calls don't have 40 years combined across 94.9, 94.1, 100.7, and 94.9 again. Which is legit as the owners of 94.1 did buy up all the KLTY jingles, library, etc. when KLTY was sold the first time and became KHYI "Y95." Since they waited a year to change 94.1 from regional Mexican to contemporary Christian, the KLTY calls were long gone and taken by AC "K-Lite" 106.5 Kanas City and they had to bring back the format under different calls until the KLTY calls got reclaimed in 1989.
