Salem State suspends D.J.?

OK, this is fourth-hand information from a friend of an ex-friend but I hear some college d.j. named "Harry B" or something was allegedly suspended for a month at WMWM for allegedly interrupting other shows and maybe (as in allegedly) being drunk and disorderly?

Ya see, this is why we need the old WCGY. The college students could intern and learn from professionals how to keep the beverages in a brown paper bag and keep their mouths shut except when on air (or having a sip).

How are these college kids ever going to learn if they can't intern at the bigger stations?
 
I did a show drunk once at the old A-B Free. It was actually a late night "guerrilla" show. I had gone to a basement show around the corner, I was a bit tipsy so I had this idea to debut a new show called "Hot Rails To Hell" and feature 70s rock. I made a CD-R and, unless someone gives me a rare punk record in trade, no one will hear it outside of myself and my wife. Dang, I miss that station sometimes. I actually did other installments of the show while sober that went better.

I should mention that I was also wearing sunglasses because my regular glasses broke at the basement show. And, yes, I drove home sober. Wearing sunglasses but sober.

it closed in early '05. Long story. There weren't a lot of people doing shows, the equipment sucked, poor reach, even when we juiced the wattage a bit. Mine was the last live show because the transmitter apparently blew up during it--or something like that (sorry, I don't remember and I'm not a technical wizard either). It just withered away, especially after Steve Provizer, the founder, left the station.

as for me, I'll stick to doing my show over the 'net. I'm having way more success with it and the equipment, as simple as it is, doesn't give me the headaches the stuff at AB Free did!

Well, it was a noble effort....

Someone should write the history of A-B Free radio.

I thought the coverage from kenmore wasn't too bad.
(Maybe being on AM hurt it? I know college students, etc....don't even know AM exists ecept when they are looking for the red sox.)

I also thought the web presence and archiving was pretty good too...


Again, someone should write up the history...so others can learn from it.

The conspiracy theorists among us will note that Joe Vig claims to have worked at the old WCGY. I'm not suggesting anything, I'm just sayin, there are those who think Joe and Jane are one and the same....;o)

well, like I said, I didn't really know the technical details. I knew how to run our piece of sh*t board for my show and that was about it :D
 
This definitely cracked me up..what??? someone doing a college show drunk? who knew! I can remember going in to do my show at WSKB in Westfield...100 watts...i would open up the cabinet next to the board and there were empty beer cans there every week..smelled like a brewery... can't say i ever did that during my show...but those student PDs thought they were real PDs and got on my case for everything! god do i miss college radio...airing calls LIVE!
 
By the way I don't believe this DJ was drunk. He was suspended for rude behavior toward others including
a homophobic comment made off-air about the guest of another DJ. Now back on air, he has decided to
end a blues show that I had created 19 and a half years ago--starting this week there will be a new name
for the show and a new format (blues will be a part of it, though). So much for the longest running show
at WMWM (created by yours truly, who has been there since 1981). You can thank Henry Bellows. But he
wasn't drunk. I have tried to get him to be nice and I hope he takes my advice.

was the show in question maybe a week ago Saturday? I caught a few minutes of Uncle Henry's when I was on my way to pick up some Chinese food
 
No - the show was probably a month ago when Henry Bellows kept muttering things under his breath about Ernie and Doug. Allegedly Henry was unhappy that a guest from Gloucester (a guy) has a husband, he then asked Ernie if a friend of ours on this board (no, he's not "Jane") is gay. Only Henry is said to have admitted to someone else on this board that the 3 letter word didn't begin with g, it began with F. Jane should also get her facts straight, it had nothing to do with drinking or WCGY. Her quip would be funny if she didn't bring up the secrets of CGY in the process. Anyone notice how Jane impersonates Casablanca and others on this board in an effort to get people guessing her identity?

But the most egregious thing, in my opinion, is that there were multiple complaints filed on Henry (not "Harry", Jane) before his anger management problems got a little out of hand. He did interrupt Trax Of The Towns by interrupting people during a show, which is probably what caused the one or two week suspension.

Ending Raccoon's Blues Show in retaliation is a sin. There's no need for bigotry, obnoxious behavior to other jocks, and changing the program out of sheer ego. Raccoon's show does a GREAT Public Service and the other fellow, Peter, deserves praise for doing a fine job as well.

p.s. another correction for Jane - Henry isn't a "college student" to my knowledge. He's definitely middle-aged.
 
If he at least called or emailed me and said, "Bob, I decided I want to branch out to some other types
of music, not just blues, and I don't want to call it the Juke Joint anymore" I would have been fine with that.
Not pleased, but I didn't have to hear the news via his show.
Second hand, I've heard he does not want me involved in this new show. To his credit, he and Doug worked
together to give me an unbelievable 25th Anniversary Show and he did take over the Juke Joint and kept it going
for another few years. There are issues we need to work out here including mistreatment of fellow DJs,
including those on the show itself.

And for the record from what I heard of his last Juke Joint, he didn't really mention that this show had
been on for just shy of twenty years, and didn't mention all we've done. Didn't mention
me or the others who have done the show over the years. But I only heard part of the show, including his
final talk break. I did mention these things on a page of the WMWM website.

Raccoon, I especially like the live performances of blues bands you personally record and air. It is YOUR show as far as I'm concerned and this is a shame.

Why should someone who did something wrong and who got suspended get to kick people out of the sandbox?
That's just not fair.
 
I will continue to take part in Tracks of the Town (Doug Mascott's show from 9-noon, which was on for years
even before Henry came on the scene), including Dec 9 when Doug does his "Gifts For Teens"
live appearances and I'll be in the studio playing Christmas/blues/local stuff. We may also pre-record
some material for Christmas Day itself via Mr. Computer.

The live performances--or recorded live--were great. Especially my good friends Sweet Loretta's Snake
Oil Jug Band, who have done the Essex Music Festival for 14 years and have also played in our studios. I record much of the festival and play it
back on air (Squeezebox Stompers, Paul Prue, Orville Giddings, and some folk/bluegrass artists). I hope to
continue to do this for WMWM.
I "gave" the show and blues directorship to him and continued to do shows every couple months while he
brought others in (including the legendary Skippy White and blues singer Toni Lynn Washington). I was
under the impression the show would last for a long time to come. If not for the scarcity of time slots on
the weekends, I could try to re-launch it somehow.

and the show in question is def. The Juke Joint on Sundays, not Uncle Henry's Basement (various hosts)
which airs on Saturdays
 
it is hard to get your show in Burlington, monsieur rac. I feel badly what is happening to you and the station and thank you all for clarifying.

at least my post got better info than the phone caller dishing the dirt, a person not on this board who shall remain nameless

harry, henry, what's the difference?

note to "Joe" who I know must be reading this religiously, tell us you didn't get a chuckle out of "learn from professionals how to keep the beverages in a brown paper bag" re: WCGY. It was 15 years ago, and I never accused you so get over it.
