Salem To Exit Jacksonville

Well we should have known that with the sale of WBGB to Cox, that Salem was going to exit the Jacksonville market all together. Since that WBGB is sold, that leaves WZAZ, WJGR and WZNZ up for grabs. Since Clear Channel is maxed out in this market they will not be an option to go to especially to throw back any stations they use to have in their hands at one time or another. My guess is that Renda picks up its fifth station in Jacksonville with one of the AM's. It would be good for Renda since WOKV is conservative now and a good liberal news talker would be good to compete with WOKV, but n reality who will pick up the stations. Look in todays TU to see the story. This is going to reshape our radio market for good.

Later.

I would love to see the stations split up and sold to individual owners, who would program them with anything but more preachers and politics.

Being realistic, though WZAZ is the most valuable of them all due to its stable format and consistent following. Then there's WZNZ, which has made some progress with sports (though since that's not my thing, I don't know their current shape). WJGR, well...no comment. Maybe someone with a vision can be creative and make a winner out of it, even with music. Hey, I can dream, can't I?

Maybe Renda can buy a couple of them and put the Gator format on them to help the ratings. That'll scare the h--- out of Cox.

The pending sale of 3 small AM's will "reshape the market"? Hardly.

None of the three are worth spit. In other markets you could sell blocks of time to preachers begging for money in exchange for salvation (a pretty good business, apparently), but with a dozen or so religious FMs in Jax there may not be room on AM. Korean Punk? Trouble is, AM conductivity is so lousy (sandy soil) that the Mighty 690 is about the only one you can hear. The one on 1320 (used to be the Country station--anybody remember the calls???) is probably the best of the bad lot, even though the one playing Gospel tunes on 1400 whipped WROO. Right neighborhood, I'd guess. The moral thing would be for Salem to knock down the towers as they leave town, thereby saving anyone foolish enough to buy 'em the huge financial losses they'd undoubtedly incur.

1320 AM was WVOJ then later WQIK AM when it was country, it does have a few acres of land where the towers stand on the westside of town...maybe apartments in the future!!! Who knows!!

Indeed, 1320 was WVOJ, playing country in the 70s. I have copies of thier jingle package. A friend of mine was once a jock there as well. My first GM at 1570, Then-WQAI Fernandina, worked there also... we had one or two gold records, framed on our studio walls, presented to him for promoting different acts.

Or Portsmith Broadcasting group (owners of 88.1 the river) picks up the AM talkers and takes over the lease for Salem, since they signed a 7 year lease with Liberty property management. Makes sense. Its a shame Salem couldnt make it here over three years.
