Salem Willing To $hell Out For KDOW Boost

The Hayward Daily Review reports that Salem is willing to pay a significant sum in order to boost KDOW/1220 from 5000/145 watts to 50kw:

Four radio towers on a former landfill could help the city build a new main library, but opponents say the 199-foot-tall structures aren't right for the shoreline at the end of West Winton Avenue. ...

Salem would lease the land for $60,000 a year, and also agreed to pay a one-time fee of $5 million for permission to build. According to a staff report, that money -- in addition to a $10 million contribution from Calpine if its Russell City Energy Center is approved -- would go toward construction of a new main library.

That's right across Winton from Gabbert's KOFY (now KTCT) site. I'm wondering how opponents are going to get it denied. Of course there is one difference: the proposed site is within what is now park land.

City of Hayward turned down Salem's generous offer of $5mil last night and said no to the four towers array.
I think this link will get you to the story in the Hayward Daily Review----http://www.insidebayarea.com/hayward/ci_12891421

If it were a station worth listening to I might be able to go along with it but Salem? Spread the Word folks even though KDOW is business talk

I agree with the Hayward city council vote to deny. Thursday evening I drove past the piece of land Salem proposes to use at the west end of West Winton Avenue. Hayward has spent a lot of money to develop the recreational uses of the shoreline, and it's easy to see that putting in 4 more radio towers would work against that goal. Now it's true that both KTCT and KFAX have towers nearby, but what is done is done. Adding 4 more towers to yet another piece of land is going to go against the attempts at using the area for recreational uses. A lot of people use the area. The Daily Review article says it's about 50,000 people a year, and having been there and hiked it myself I can see that to be true. If Salem wants KDOW so badly they should multiplex it on the KFAX towers or something.

By the way, being about 300 yards from the KTCT 1050 towers I was able to pull in KNX 1070 (just 2 channels away) clearly. KTCT had negligible splatter. I was very surprised.

No longer possible. KTRB will be diplexing from one of the KFAX towers during daylight hours. Still conceivable, I guess, that KDOW could retain its existing 5 kW ND D facility and could diplex with KFAX at night. A better approach would be for KTRB to diplex with KCBS by day. That seems seems so obvious. KDOW could then diplex with KFAX day and night. Perhaps KTRB could not run 50 kW by day from the KCBS site, but that's by no means certain until it has been studied. There are four towers there, after all. And perhaps KDOW could not run 50 kW from the KFAX array, but I suspect that they could get a lot more than the present 5 kW-D/145W-N. Maybe the problem is covering the KDOW CoL (Palo Alto) at night from the KFAX site. KDOW's proposed 50 kW-N operation would deliver an NIF signal to just barely enough of Palo Alto to allow the station to be licensed there as a Class B AM. Any reduction in night power from 50 kW could easily require a waiver, which could be difficult to obtain.

Did I just hear a bid of 15 Million Dollars from Salem? If the mule won't listen get a bigger board! Just think what the City of Hayward could do with that 15 Million. Or do they want 20 Million? lol..

$5 million, not $15. Hayward spent $20 million reclaiming the shoreline for recreation uses.
