Salem's Real Plan For KMKI 620?

It makes no sense for a good AM signal to simply simulcast a rimshot FM that is in a paid religious format. All of Salem's other general formats are here in the Metroplex already: Conservative Talk, Spanish Christian, business talk, and of course, the #1 Christian AC station in the country (KLTY).

Does anyone have any speculation on what Salem really plans to do with KMKI (or is this a feint to flip KWRD-FM to Black Gospel)?

... and of course, the #1 Christian AC station in the country (KLTY).

There is a Christian Contemporary station in Orlando that might argue that point.

If I am not incorrect, the business talk format is not on an owned and operated station. My thinking is business talk might move to 620.

I would wonder if that might happen based on Salem's past experience but the past is no indication of the future. One certainly has to look at the stick value of the FM. Might Salem have something up their sleeve, certainly.

There's no way its staying a simulcast forever, I'm a bit surprised they aren't moving The Answer to 620.

The Answer 620
660 The Word
100.7 The Resurrection, Classic Christian Hits.

In all seriousness, they will probably just move the format off 1160 and throw it on 620 whenever the lease is up.

While I can't imagine 620 and 100.7 will simulcast in the long-term, I'm not surprised they didn't move the Answer to 620. Although 660's nighttime signal is terrible, it has a much better daytime signal than 620, and that's when talk radio gets the bulk of its listeners. It has great skywave coverage and goes out quite-a-ways on good radios, but 620's primary signal contour doesn't even cover all of Dallas County in the daytime.

While WPOZ in Orlando does better in the ratings than KLTY does to an extent, KLTY has 3 times the cume many times due to market size. So KLTY has the highest number of listeners in America, averaging 900,000 people.

We didn't have to wait long to find out what they wanted. Sometime yesterday afternoon the business talk format moved to KMKI, while a continuous barker runs on 1160 "looking for business talk? We moved to 620 AM....this is KVCE Highland Park"

The 1160 frequency's corporate entity is Dallas Broadcasting LLC, managed by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who of course is long connected to KSEV in Houston. The corporation paid more than 9 million for the channel, which was improved by the infamous First Broadcasting to it's 35KW day 1KW night status. With the day site being flooded out from the spring rains they filed to operate from the night site near Lewisville. If they're doing that, it's a lousy signal. There's always someone wanting to broker an AM channel for ethnic or religious purposes. But if it should sell, the present owner is going to take one big haircut on the sale price, just like Disney did in its sale of 620 to Salem. Disney could afford it though.

And 620 sounds a whole lot better now, obviously some tweaks to the processing!

I thought Dan still owned 1160 as he does KSEV in Houston. Depending on the debt service on that 9 million, brokering the station to an ethnic or religious group sure wouldn't cover the monthly note payment, but then again, Salem was leasing 1160, so it is likely the deal was cash versus a note. Luckily for 1160, rates have traditionally been higher in Dallas than in Houston.

620 should serve Salem well with the Business Talk format. There was talk about the nighttime signal not being much. Considering the format, I doubt that matters too much. While I have never seen a breakdown of Business Talk listening habits, I would suspect listening during the post sunset hours would be minimal compared to the three daytime dayparts. Early sunset and later sunrise in winter months could certainly be an issue. When I was at a station near Dallas I think we had to be off at 5:15 in December. So, losing a bunch of coverage in post sunset hours shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Was for a long time. I don't recall having problems in Rockwall or Dallas Counties either though. Admittedly its been some time since I've tuned into 620.

Officially it's now KEXB (their slogan is Experts in Business). FCC-info.com confirms it and the start date of 10-1-15.

Interesting, as many of the former Radio Disney stations have retained their "Mickey" or "Disney" based call signs. For instance 1590 in Houston still has the KMIC call. I would have thought the Mouse Empire would have made call letter changes a stipulation of the sale of those stations. Perhaps a sign of how irrelevant call signs are to the average listener these days.
