London...today...bombings...Tony Blair flies back to London...returns to G8 Summit...not 9/11 proportions but still on the news everywhere.

9/11...No one has forgotten about it...

Does anybody else wonder where Steve gets his facts from. Steve if no one cares about news than why is the station that you consult and work for doing news in the morning. Did the PD finally realize that you were so full of yourself that he decided not to listen to you anymore. Some kind of consultant you are if the staff won't even listen to you. If no one cares news anymore than why did every network and news cahnnel have the london bombings on today??????

I got the story in two minutes and have not seen any changes all day when I checked back so why bother? I think people review the story then move on. Us radio geeks tend to admire Les Nessman too much.

I never said that a station should 100% shut off news, but it sure is not a major focus anymore for anyone around here and stats do indeed show that people just don't care! I just read an article in R&R about that not too awfully long ago. People are all news-ed out. That is why things like Foxnews and CNN fare so well because you can get your headlines in little snipits and move along. By the way, if you REREAD my post, you will see that I said good jocks should encorporate news into their delivery to give people the info they want and need. My point was not to say the news is not worthy of coverage but rather as broadcasters we need to change the way we deliver the news. Its a digital age. More people turn to the net for their news than who read the local papers. One has to consider that before they set off trying to win the coveted Buckeye News-Hawk Award that the previously mentioned Les Nessman fought so hard to win.

As for the London Bombings today. I was all over the dial and barely heard a blip...not ONE...so who is reporting on it other than talk radio. Yes maybe that was a big boo boo because it was newsworthy even it it means breaking format for just a second, but it seemes that really no one around here gave it much press...NOBODY!

Oh and thanks for listening in the morning to be able to comment on what we do! The PD and the owner will be delighted. I will tell them about it tomorrow when we speak again...oh wait...they don't listen to me so that won't work. Guess I shall have to tell myself about it instead. Just drives you nuts that we have a strong and devoted TEAM...wow what a concept. People in radio who work together to better their station!

Who ISN'T doing news?

Hate to disagree with Paul's basic premise, but is there ANY station in State College that DOESN'T do news--at least in morning drive? GMR, JHT, QWK, 3WZ, Lite all do news. (Never could stand Oldies, so I don't know what WOWY does). Bus? Buzz? Hell, RSC & MAJ do network + local 24 hours, I think. 3WZ has the Channel 6 people doing PMD casts and it seems like Jones does a cast every few minutes in the morning. No, nobody in town has a 6-person fulltime News Team, but nobody in a town this size ever did! Again... is there ANY station in town NOT doing news?

I was on-air when the Columbia disintegrated on re-entry. I mentioned it as soon as I found out about it. At that point, it was overdue and "missing", but everybody knew what must have happened. I mentioned it after a music sweep, into the stopset. I basically said that it was a breaking story and developing quickly, and to keep updated, find a television. Program Directors might take exception to that. My take was, if somebody is interested, we certainly couldn't cover the story like a news network, and for a story like that, we wouldn't even if we could, so if you want to know about it, you should seek information elsewhere.

If we'd have had a news/talk station, I would have sent listeners there.

Its a GREAT use of that talk time. The people who say that jocks talk too much on the radio are really saying that what the jock talks about does not matter to them. You have to motivate the audience. It does not need to be funny or silly. It can be happy (like talking about BEA winning the State Title) or it can be sad (like mentioning that the voices of Tigger and Piglet died within 24 hours of each other or the bombings in London). It just has to relate to something that would MOVE them.

There are some jocks in this market very good at this task. There are others who do not even attempt it and that is sad. You will see this A LOT in part-time weekend talent who in some cases may not ever even get airchecked cause they are looked at almost as throwaway talent. Sadder still is the idea that their PD often does not encourage them or in some cases DISCOURAGES THEM from doing such. I have heard many PD's say just shut up and play the music. I think they forget the the whole reason a station was given a license in the first place was to serve the community! Are we serving them well if we fail to talk about the things that matter to them?

I agree with the weekend air talent statement.....however I am not familiar with the local programmers so I don't know how they work with their talent-so i am leaving them out of this............weekends are a big deal......in some stations the weekend talent is better thna the full time talent...that is true in alot of markets 75 and up....also your remotes and some of your biggest promotions are on the weekends.......I learned more from PD's who checked me on the weekends than I ever did when I was full time......keep doing what youre doing isnt an aircheck critique......this 'personal' touch is what has been lost by PDs stuck with multiple stations etc and the hard drive making it so easy to just vt it or import air talent I still have my air checks critiqued by a PD in Miami. You might be surprised..if you send Scott Shannon at WPLJ or any other major mkt pd, a 1 min clip of a few breaks..they have been known to send back a critique...but the weekend jocks have to WANT to be guided and learn the right way.....have a good weekend adams

And if I'm tuning into my favorite music station and hear a blip like that, I might stay tuned in just to see what's happening until I can get home to a 24/7 TV outlet that will fill in all of the blanks...

...kind of a teaser to keep the dial set where it is...then again, it could be enough to make me flip to a news station if I'm interested in hearing more.

>as an earlier post said, that would be a perfect time to cross promote your news outlet......CC stations are good at cross promoting their properties...they always run feature promos on their format menu.....cross promoting between classic rock and sports...congruent demos.....will someone please play the Heat is ON.....
