Sales

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the board and new to the industry. Can someone tell me about the ups and downs in working in radio sales? What's the pay like, what all is involved, are you given a client list or do you hit the streeets and make new clients?

Thanks

The first year is the toughest. If you can make it past one year...it is a great career. Good money - top reps in Dallas make $300,000+ a year. Great perks - and a pretty good work hours.

The first year, you are on your own...no accounts...a lot of cold calling...a lot of "no's". It also depends on who your work for...your LSM and owner can make a huge difference.

Cumulus (Wolf, Ticket, Bone, and KLIF) is one of the best owners. CBS is OK. Clear Channel is tough. ABC/Citadel is unknown...they are about to make a lot of changes.

You mean Susquehanna was a good owner. Cumulus sucks. CC is better than CBS. In houston CBS has dropped their rates recently with a lot of value added spots cluttering up the air. Same thing i hear at the Dallas cluster.

What are you basing those opinions on?
In other words, what is it, exactly that makes Cumulus suck so much more than Susquehanna?

And Why is CC better than CBS?
I know people thathave worked at CC, both programming and sales, and they swear they'll never go back. And yet I know people who work at CBS who don't feel the same way. Now it's entirely possible that that is just a matter of what position you're in. i.e. If you're ajock, and your PD treats you well, you might love the place, where the same owner, different format, and the PD's an a-hole, you hate the company...

So I guess my question here is what do you base this on? DO you have anything that backs it up, or is it it all just knee-jerk opinions based on what you think you know? If you know that Cumulus sucks so much more than Susquehanna, can we assume you've worked for both? Because in teh abscence of first hand knowledge, at best your spouting 2nd hand opinions, right?
And if you're working at Susq/Cumulus, how do you know that CC is better than CBS? More 2nd hand opinions? Or are you just regurgitating bitter screeds that have been posted here by has-beens and can't-make-it's who bitch because they get fired (because they suck) and blame it on the evil corporate overlords?

Another question Are non-competes for sales persons the norm in DFW?

don't do it.....the blood letting in DFW isn't done yet, unless you're well established in the media ad world of DFW, you'll starve your first 2 years, even if you make it. I don't care who you start with....
