Salk joins WEEI in Mid-March

So I guess that he's working out a fairly long notice at his Seattlle station. Isn't this a bit unusual in radio?

FWIW here's what I think is going to happen. Nothing. (apologies to George Costanza) Nothing will change. Afternoon drive will have a blip out of curiosity, but the ratings will go back to where they are now. The only way this doesn't happen is if the people who were fed up with both Ordway and Felger go back to 'EEI.

They will get rid of D&C when their contracts allow it, but nothing will change. Contrary to what a lot of people think, D&C haven't talked about politics in a couple years. They are pretty much straight sports. They will put two new people in who talk sports but they won't beat T&R.......why would they? It's obvious that sports talk is a tough sell in the morning. What will change is that 'EEI saves some payroll dollars.

They will leave Mutt and Merloni alone. I do not see why Mutt is on the air, but if they haven't gotten rid of him yet, they probably won't.

I wonder if he will still host "ESPN Radio"? He's on some Saturday nights "Sports Center Saturday" He's usually on 8pm-Midnight.
He's great if you ask me.

Did Holley and Salk have any sort of tryout?

D&C may not have been talking politics, but they were talking about Sandusky for months and beat the Mante Te'o story into the ground. That's their problem, allowing their interest in a topic to dictate the show and affect the tone. I think the Callahan/Minihane combo that Chad Finn loves would talk sports in a manner that would attract people who think T&R are weak in sports or don't talk about them enough.

they were talking about Sandusky
Exactly: and who do they blame for bad stuff happening? The story was huge but day after day? Make ya sick as Dapper used to say.

No politics? Scott Brown didn't even have to buy time, he got it all free. Nothing wrong with that, it's expected on talk radio. But it may have ramifications elsewhere like your ratings.

I do agree though with the general premise that EEI isn't getting back to the lofty heights. They do have to get closer to it than this.

I haven't listened to T&R enough to be sure what kind of show they are. The few times I've listened they were very funny and entertaining, but hardly what I'd call a sports show. Jon Wallach was the only one who sounded like he knew anything. It seems that they are considered head to head competition with D&C because they are on a station that has sports shows for the balance of the day ala Imus when he was on WFAN. Why are they not compared to the two guys on 105.7 or Matty or any other non-sports show? I never heard of them before the launch of the Sports Hub, but weren't they on WBCN in the morning for a while before it launched? My point is that I just don't see these two shows competing for the same listener. I can see it in the afternoon. I'm not counting on it, but if the new guy is great they could really compete with Felger. It wasn't too long ago that he was known as DB and justifiably so.

They really haven't gotten as far away from sports as they used to. Sandusky was sports related, though they did dwell on it. Manti T'eo was more comedic and they only went with it for a week and everyone else did too. I think the biggest audience they ever had was during the Elian Gonzalez affair in Miami. There was a time when there was scant sports talk at all during their show, but I'd say since the Scott Brown election they have not had much to say about politics at all. Oddly enough they had monster ratings when the two Republicans talked about politics here in the bluest of blue states.

Are young men listening to 105.7 or Matty? The closest competitor for T&R might be Karlson & McKenzie.

T&R's rise neatly coincides with D&C's drop. it's pretty easy connect the dots.

Maybe I'm wrong because I never heard of them before the Sports Hub, but I thought that they were on WBCN in the morning for a couple of years before TSH came on. Were they beating D&C in the ratings then? If they weren't, what changed? If they were, why wasn't it mentioned then?

They were on BCN in the mornings for a while before moving to the Sports Hub. I have no idea if they were beating D&C or not during their time on BCN, but I think their primary "competition", and hence the show they bragged about beating at that point was Greg Hill. They didn't start targeting or worrying about D&C until they moved to the Sports Hub and ostensibly became a sports show.

What changed was that the WBCN/Sports Hub switch was big news. More people knew about the show from advertising, news reports, and having F&M leading the way. T&R rose while D&C fell. Why aren't these two morning drive shows on the major sports stations in competition?

He's great if you ask me.

He's 4 times less cheaper, half the age and will work three times harder than Ordway and will relate better to younger FM male audience. All the good qualities that Entercom was looking for.

in a Globe article, he said, "I'm especially excited to talk Bruins hockey." There 'ya go--expect more hockey talk.

Toucher and Rich's sports knowledge is negligible. I've actually been enjoying hearing Johnston and Flynn fill in for them this week since it's sports talk and Flynn in particular is very good.

As long as WEEI is still aligned with ESPN Radio, that arrangement will likely continue...
