Sally Starr and the Tomatoes

T

Those RRRRs

Guest
This probably won't receive a response, but I heard a story recently that Sally Starr was on top of a float during a parade in Mount Holly, NJ some time back in the 50's or 60's and the crowd threw tomatoes at her.

Can anyone confirm or deny this story?

I hear that's how New Jersey normally greets royalty.

Isn't RJ Ron Joseph a good friend of Ms. Starr? Perhaps he can add to this story.

I'm not a scholar on Ms. Starr, but I do know a lot about her history. She lived in Cherry Hill, NJ in the 1960's and my bother was her plumber. I got to meet her many times. She was very nice to this extremely nerdy fan.

I once referred to her in a song I wrote about Philadelphia kid hosts and did some extensive research about her past along with that of other Philadelphia Kid's TV legends. To the best of my knowledge, she was never pelted by tomatoes in any public event, and she appeared at hundreds, maybe thousands in her career. No news story about it ever surfaced during my research. However, as we live in an area that boos Santa Claus, it wouldn't surprise me. Hell, they used to pelt the Monroe Township Little League band (the first in the nation) with eggs during parades. Of course, we probably stunk; it's difficult to remember back that far.

Here’s the chorus of the song I wrote, citing the loss of gentler times:

“No more Sally Starr and Uncle Pete, Gene London or Pixanne,
Captain Noah, Captain Philadelphia, too.
Wee Willie Webber, Uncle Phil and Sawdust Sam,
Don’t you know I drank my Bosco just for you?

Bertie the Bunyip with Lee Dexter at his side,
Mr. Rivets, Adam Android, Dickory Doc
Happy the Clown, won’t you please take me for a ride?
With Rex Morgan, Chief Halftown and Dr. Shock.”

Oh, man. You have the Philly kids TV Hall Of Fame. Some we all remember. But I thought I was the last person alive that seemed to remember Bertie the Bunyip. Dickory Doc and Ranger Rex Morgan too. And Bosco! How much of that did we put in our milk do you think.

LOVE, LUCK AND LOLLIPOPS !

Sally Starr is usaully disliked by the people who have delt with her before. She can be Very nasty to people in general. I heard she is back at WVLT for what I don't know. ( Of course you have to remember it's WVLT so who knows? )

I'm sorry to hear that. Of course many times in this business, what we hear about people is a case of "the blind men and the elephant." Everybody has a different take. A few years ago, I heard nothing but good things about Sally from a former WVLT employee. My personal experiences with her were great, but that was a when I was a kid in the early 60's. I did enjoy her show on WVLT, so if she's coming back, I hope they start to stream so I can hear her where I live now.

Great memories, Betrayed, thanks! I loved Bosco. The "transfat police" would probably ban it today, but I remember really enjoying it.

I really enjoyed Dickory Doc, even though I was in high school in the late 60's when it aired and even watched Adam Android (both characters played by the very talented Aldo Farnese) when I was in college. Now, where did I put that geek sweatshirt?

As long as somebody has already mentioned Bertie the Bunyip, does anybody hereremember the Crusader Rabbit cartoon series running on that show back in the Fifties?

Ya mean with his sidekick Ragland T. Tiger?
Sure. I was able to get both Philly and NYC TV back in the jay.
But I had to go outside to physically turn the antenae. I think that's how I got these damn hernias. Now no one has to move to do anything. The Jetsons were right. By the way, I can even hum the Crusader Rabbit theme. I used to watch Andy Devine on Andy's Gang too. Yeah..that Andy Devine from the cowboy movies of the 40's. He was so bad it was good. Picture Roy on the Mickey Mouse Club, only with a gruff voice and looks that would likely be labeled an ax-murderer today. But there he was a host of a national kiddie show. Maybe I should.....oh never mind.

Does anyone still remember "Charlie Chinchopper" from the "Wee Willie Weber Show" ???

Of course. He was the "puppet" that was really the side of a fist with a magic marker face drawn on it.

We Willie did have a "hand character" ala Senor Wences. I can't remember the name, but it wasn’t Charlie Chinchopper. Charlie was a character that utilized Webber's chin, with the character drawn upside down on his chin. They then did the pretty nifty analog video trick of inverting the image so the tip of the chin looked like the top of Charlie's head.

I also owned an Elmo Wiffleweather unicyclist figure (Wiffle for WFIL). It was modeled after the same "action figure" (sounds better than doll) that used to deliver Wee Willie's weather every morning. I bugged my parents at breakfast by delivering a forecast to the kitchen table. Good grief, I've always been a geek.

Wow! What a bunch of memories. Although those of us who frequented Cartoon Corners drank CoCo Marsh (spelling?)
