I listened to Sam a bit today and noticed their legal ID had changed to 105.1
WSSM. So it went from WANG to WKOO to WSSM faster than I have ever known any radio station to do before. Only NM I guess... But I do like the stations style!

Remember the whole WERO > WBOB > WERO debacle a few months back? I think they were only WBOB for a week or so.

Only NM! :)
______________

Nowadays that's not too unusual. Keep in mind there's a WRVA 100.7 FM in NC and a WRVA 1140 AM in Richmond VA. Both are owned by Clear Channel. I'm sure there are many other similar cases.

By the way, I just looked for WSSM on the Radio-Locator site and they've updated it to reflect the change.

Ironically enough, the WSSM calls were just dumped a few months ago in St. Louis by a station that flipped from Smooth Jazz to...whatever as "The Arch".

WDCG/WSSM

I see on Radio locator that WDCG is moving the tower south of Raleigh. It will radiate better toward the east and south. I think that is going to make listening to WSSM very difficult. Right now on the western side of WSSM you can hear WDCG clearly interfering with their signal.

Where can you hear WDCG at ALL in eastern NC? I can barely hear it in Wilson, much less more east...
______________

I posted this once I thought, but maybe I hit the wrong key...

Anyway I live in Onslow County and can hear WDCG interfering on a regular basis. When you head out of Jacksonville toward Swansboro it disappears. When you head toward Duplin County it is a battle between the 2 signals as to what you will hear depending on the weather, I am shocked you cannot hear WDCG in WIlson. It has to do with the transmitter installation on WDCG's tower I guess.

WDCG has always had problems in Rocky Mount and Wilson. I've heard it pretty clearly in Goldsboro before, which is more in the Duplin County direction, so you're probably right... it's in the orientation of the antenna.

One of the problems, and WUNC and Sunny 93.9 share this problem, they are on a relatively short stick in an awful place. 106.1 RDU has issues in some places on the western side of the market for the same reason.

This is one of the reasons why WUNC originally bought 90.9 in Rocky Mount I'm sure...
______________

Not bought so much as worked the state legislature to secure the station.

Speaking of WUNC, they're really pushing this "North Carolina Public Radio" thing -- that's flashing across their RDS display now.
______________

You can just feel the love eminating from Chapel Hill. We're from the university and we're here to help.

I get the feeling you hold a tad bit of disdain for WUNC. Maybe it's none of my business, but if it's not the obvious reason of competition in Greenville... why?
______________

Because half of their staff are folks who have been there for years, are genuinely smart and helpful, dedicated to their mission, and easy to get along with. The other half are all new folks from other regions who believe truly in their hearts that other radio folks in the state are less talented, less human, and hold us all in complete disdain.

It's like visiting a friend who has an obnoxious spouse. You visit because you like some of the company, and you leave because you dislike the other.

That, and the Greenville thing. I live there so I take it a little more personally.

You live in Greenville too? I never knew that, I always figured you lived in NB. Man, that's one hell of a drive to work every day!
______________

The interference from WDCG continued all the way to Pelletier! Almost to Hwy 24! That is sad!! It was very cloudy that day, but...still sad. I think there was a lot of skip. We were picking up Beach 104.1, as well as 94.7 and 96.1 in Raleigh very clearly.

BEACH 104.1 WCXL

A side note...I was listening to Beach 104.1 WCXL on NC Hwy 73 between Concord, NC and Albemarle, NC this past Friday.
Edited by John Sells on 06/28/05 12:44 AM.

Re: BEACH 104.1 WCXL

I get 'Beach' in Roanoke Rapids...and that's with Foxy booming in on 104.3.

It's actually nice. I used to live in downtown NB which was fun, but now I can review airchecks and shows on the commute. Sometimes I mix it up and go through Honolulu on 118.

We also have a studio at ECU which I usually do interviews in. If you ever hear Mark Rutledge or Scott Batchelor from the Reflector on, it was done at ECU.

Re: WDCG/WSSM

I can remember a few years ago, when 105.1 was country formatted WANG, driving the winding road from Fort Macon State Park towards NC 58 and hearing WDCG "take over" clear as a bell when WANG was knocked off-air for a minute or so. This was in the afternoon. I've vacationed down there for 25+ years and G105 was a fairly frequent DX catch along the Crystal Coast when now-WSSM was on 104.9 as WMSQ (I don't know what their facilities were in the 104.9 days, but I can remember not even being able to hold WMSQ to Emerald Isle before it faded to silence..even 1,000-watt sister station 1330 AM was-and still is-audible there)
