I'll never understand the hate on Sam Malone here, or of Roula & Ryan. They're perfectly representative of modern mainstream culture. (much more so than some of the characters you're pining for) They're completely talented, and perfectly relatable to their audience. Maybe you and I are not the target. So what? They have talent or they wouldnt be there.

As a non-morning dayparter, I can sit around and whine about how much more money they make than I do, or I can get to work, aircheck, demo, and start networking. This is America, and I got this far.

Personally I have little desire to have to watch & discuss American Idol, and talk to soccer moms, and not offend anyone, and have to listen to consultants, and rub elbows with all the suits & wannabes, and sit in strategy sessions, and get up at 3am, and have a co-host who may be a b****, and deal w/ all the scrutiny. Morning show hosts have talents you havent even imagined. I dont know if I would ever be up to it.

Im GLAD they pay these guys. This is the last piece of evidence that corporate owners understand the value of US. This helps them to understand the basic premise that PEOPLE relate to PEOPLE. Thank God they get in bidding wars over guys like Sam. (who happens to be pretty darn nice off the air) This is good for all jocks.

The realization that people will listen to a station for someone they relate to & believe, and that by promoting a jock, putting his/her face on that billboard or tv spot will raise their profile value, and thus raise their value to your station, (i.e. --- people actually show up to your remotes/promotions) which in turn makes them more profitable---- this concept is good for ALL OF US. This will keep us working. This will feed our kids.

Those of you who are not working in the biz, this concept will ensure that your favorite station doesnt become a pointless jukebox.

I STARTED THIS CHAT... YOU DONT LIKE IT LOCK IT OUT!

I am kidding about that last one...just wanted a good giggle out of you...as for you, you if you are a listener, get use to the fact that Sam will only be in this market for so long...his contract is bound to be up sooner or later...Clear Channel, made a huge mistake hiring him, they are now realizing that...if you as a listener realize this, that They really do not care if you like a has-been, they only care about their ratings...god I love corporations. People called in for months bitching about R&R getting fired, did CC do anything. No they laughed and said ok, we will make note of you being mad. "This is the last piece of evidence that corporate owners understand the value of US" us? no they really do not care about you. I promise you if you call Cox, Clear Channel, Infinity, and what ever else you may listen to, they will seriously not give two sh*ts about you unless you wear one of those ppm. do you have one no. do you drive a mini van yes.
Morning shows are not that hard, R&R map out their morning show for the day. hour by hour. They stay on topic, follow what’s to come next of course, they do not create random segments called cop spouse and talk about that for 15 minutes to just kill time and make you feel special. (apparently that segment did since you sight sam for having creativity)

As a morning DJ Sam doesn't effect me at all, because I don't listen. Ever...for any reason. I did listen once, and I flipped it over to something more entertaining...I think it was the traffic conditions frequency for SW Freeway at 610.

I have tried and tried to find something I like in morning drive, and what I have found is that if I put in a CD of Larry Lujack WLS airchecks, or my old pal The Greaseman circa late 1970s at WAPE, then I am once again entertained by morning radio.

But I never "got" the presence of Sam on KTRH to begin with, nor do I "get" Chris Baker. But what I REALLY never got was the move from real news on KTRH to all of this mindless blather. I know that it is cheaper to do, and I suspect this is the real reason.

Michelle is a very nice lady, and very talented. We use her at BYP anytime we do new CD spots for Hillary Duff, etc. Michelle does a GREAT job at that, and I have had some nice chats with her while producing the spots...a complete class act.

I do not know Sam Malone personally, but from a purely professional standpoint I never thought he was suited to adult talk radio.

Getting back to watering KTRH down with all of these talk shows...I must say that I detest Rush Limbaugh and all the evil for which he stands. So while getting Sam OFF of KTRH was a good move, replacing him with Limbaughtomy was like replacing a fever blister with a chancre sore.

Putting aside my personal loathing of Limbaugh, I am looking at the 20,000,000 weekly cume he had back in 2003 as opposed to the 10,000,000 he has now. I am guessing that the grey thing wedged in the crevasse of Rush's colon is the fin of the shark he (thankfully...FINALLY) jumped. ;)

KTRH made its mistake (for listeners) when it dropped the all news format. It shouldn't even be called Newsradio any more - call it News Talk like KLVI or even Talk radio or Super Talk but leave news out of it - its rarely there.

As for the talk show hosts, I prefer Baker over the others that KTRH has on - although I thought Dennis Miller was a welcome replacement for Ed Schitz at night.

Unfortunately I was doing commercial production at KTRH when Ken came aboard, and was doing imaging at KKRW...LONG day. Anyway, he made such a BIG deal about putting ALL the news on KTRH and ALL the talk on KPRC. Then slowly, but surely...all of these conservative talk shows started sneaking over to KTRH, which made me ask "WTF?"

I enjoy Ed Schultz, and he provides a bit of balance for all of the wingnut programming. But, like you, I would prefer they dump all of it. I like to at least have the illusion that my news is neutral...without all of the commentary. Except for Paul Harvey. Paul is as great now as he was 40 years ago.

I get the feeling that Chris Baker's "edge" was his close, personal relationship with Kenny-Boy. With that "in" now "out," I don't know that Chris should plan any large installment purchases anytime soon. Who knows...maybe he will get a call from his old pal, and will also be dispatched to Elba...I mean, Miami. :-\

I agree with the above poster about KTRH. WHen it was an all news station (or at least "mostly" news station) it was my station of choice anytime I was in the car. I always thought it made sense to make one station talk and one news. But there were eventually turned into clones of each other.

I enjoy Chris Baker when he is not talking politics (when he does that, he sounds like so many other Rush wannabes). When he's talking about funny or goofy stuff, it's funny. I've wondered about him now that Ken is gone. They seemed to be really close, but who knows...
