I had a chance to visit the place where rock n roll was born recently, Sun Studio in Memphis. For those who may not know, this is where Elvis, Jerry Lee, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Howlin Wolf get started with their recording careers along with countless others. Many of the instuments and much of the recording equipment that you will see is still used today. The Studio is open to the public during the day and is actually still in use for recording at night. U2 recorded "Rattle and Hum" there with BB King. John Mellencamp recorded 9 songs there in August for his upcoming release. The young lady who directs the tours is from North Florida. The studio still has the original floor and panels on the walls. Copy and paste the link below into your web browser to see the slide show....BTW, I am not a pro with a camera or anything else actually...if you get the chance to visit this place, it is worth the 12 bucks.....enjoy.

Wow--great pictures--thanks!

Who would have thought Jerry Lee would outlast the rest of the million $ quartet?

Just a little side note, many on this board know I appreciate the history of the blues and the relationship between those artists and the world of rock, R&B, soul, and just about any other type of music we hear on the radio today. It all started with the only real honest sound, Blues. Sun studio was the place it all started. Blues artists are in fact the founders. Many of you may have seen the movie about Leonard Chess recently. Most of the artists who recorded for Chess records start at sun. Sam Phillips knew he didn't have the means to promote these talented artists so he sent many of them to Chicago to record on the Chess label. He nearly lost everything he had as a result. This man actually cared about the artists, his mission was to do what ever it takes to help them make it on the national stage. There is room for debate on this topic but if you ask me, and no one has mind you, Sam Phillips is the Godfather of contemporary music. I was much more interested in visiting Sun then graceland for that very reason. There never would have been an Elvis or others without Sam Phillips.

just my 2 cents....

You know what's odd?

I actually work for the Sirius station at Graceland and have lived in Memphis since 1991. Still, I have never been to Sun; maybe I should make a day of it sometime.

For the music history buffs like me, I thought this would be worthy of a post.

53 years ago today (February 15), an impromptu meeting at Sun Records happened bringing legends Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins together for what would be the one and only time. That meeting would later be referred to as "The Million Dollar Quartet." To think of their greatness and influence alone, one can only imagine what could have happened if they would have collaberated in the future. Sad though that this is just one of so many instances where the greatness and heritage of American music is just forgotten.
