Same DJ On Multiple Markets

How common is it these days for the same DJ or on-air personality to work a daily shift at more than one station in different markets? For example, doing 6–10 a.m. on weekdays at one station in Boston and then 10 a.m.–2 p.m. on weekdays at another station in a different city.

It depends on the station, who owns it, and the format.

It's very common for iHeart country stations to run Bobby Bones in the morning, or at some point during their day.

On the other hand, Audacy, Hubbard, Bonneville, and Connoisseur stations tend to be mostly local in all dayparts.

Keep in mind the goal of a personality is to have as large an audience as possible. Restricting himself by geography is an unnecessary limitation to his popularity. So most experienced personalities want to be heard on as many stations as possible. They can either do it with syndication, or by offering themselves to individual stations on a market by market basis.

Its gotta be more common than what we are thinking of. But then again if there's multiple stations that person is doing its gotta be from voicetracking from the Iheart office, Audacy or Cumulus/Westwood offices. Yes I mean the most famous example Ryan Seacrest would do the show in Los Angeles for KIIS and Iheart stations around the country. He even did his Iheart show from inside the back room of Live with Kelly show when he was doing that show on TV. Sometimes his Iheart show and American Top 40 show is on location where American idol auditions were taking place at one point.

As vw86 says, this is super common. In the Seattle market (12th ranked I think) one of the big Class C players, KZOK, is completely tracked from other markets. And fairly sloppy about it too- the bios for the various jocks reference where they actually are and often include email addresses for their other station. KZOK is an iHeart owned station, but all of the bigger players do this.

Even Christian radio has DJs on in several markets. Jerry Woods voicetracks for Positive Life Radio (in the PacNW) on weekends and does the morning show at 91.9 WGTS in Washington D.C. Then Dave Arthur, who retired a couple of years ago from KTSY Boise, still does a morning show (voicetracked) with his wife Shauna for KEEH Shine 104-9 Spokane, and does the afternoon show (voicetracked) for Positive Life. Ceci LaBarge is on PLR, SOS Radio AND Family Life Radio. She just left Joy 99 in Grand Rapids, Michigan after 27 years.

This is much more common within markets than between markets. Typically, within clusters, someone from a morning show is tracking middays at a sister station. Someone else from the morning show might be tracking afternoons. It's also very common for jocks to voicetrack shifts in adjacent markets.

Terese Mains whos based at FAmily Life Radio in NY State is on a few christian stations across the country.. I think she is/was on SOS in Utah and KJIL in Kansas

its not just KZOK whos jock bios are sloppy, its any iheart station..

Also in the past decade we mentioned that Audacy has market managers/general managers that are assigned to manage more than one market. So its not shocking to hear a DJ doing more than one city.

Its Like the one where the PD for KSFO San Francisco is also the PD of KABC-AM Los Angeles in another thread we did.

iHeart does this on a very large scale. To make it sound local, the jock records the name of the station/slogan 100 different ways and one of them plays before their voice track. The jock is essentially only doing one show in multiple markets, sometimes 20+. Some of them use the same playlists and some are still programmed locally. This is why many do not reference songs. Local morning shows are increasingly being axed in favor of duo's from other markets that do the same thing. Townsquare does this on a smaller basis but with more custom local breaks to talk about events or station promotions.

This, by the way, is a long-standing technique. ABC's TalkRadio in the 80s did that, along with the talent recording the local phone numbers. Later, AM Only/America's Best Music did the same thing...a pre-recorded call letter thing rolls, folllowed by the jock on satellite:

RECORDED: "960 KABL."

LIVE: "...with Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable. Before that, we heard..."
