Maybe this sounds like a dumb question...but what is your station's format? I'm asking that because I'm the PD of a Hot AC station, and mine is focused more on Hot AC chart hits and gold songs. What are you trying to achieve?

Not a dumb question at all.

This is a Hot AC station at heart in a small market, with CHR, AC, and Jack stations with bigger and better signals than mine. I've found that my listeners have responded favorably to some CHR influence on the playlist (Dashboard, Gym Class Heroes... just added Justin Timberlake). During the day I have a more Hot AC, while at night I lean younger.

Looks pretty decent to me. IMO, you might want to consider some deeper research of your titles, as some of the songs might be more successful on an Alternative or Triple A station. I also like the idea of leaning younger at night. From my experience, most core Hot AC listeners are going to be at home watching TV by 7 PM or so. For me, this is the perfect opportunity to "test" edgier or newer songs. Just my two cents worth...but it looks pretty good to me. Hope that helps! Anyone else with opinions?

I was just going to say, where were the rhythmic songs? I'm guessing he is leaning more Modern AC than Hot AC. However, he just mentioned Justin Timberlake, so I guess that answers that question! ;D

I personally like the playlist, but would a mass appeal audience go for the more deeper cuts? I'd give it a go! :)

Without the rhythmic element, the overall sound would seem to be more of a "soft rock" approach--an AC programmed for gay guys... and old biker chicks.

Oh, it was a JOKE... just poking a little fun.

But there may be a thread of truth there. Women like upbeat pop tunes, and guys programming stations targeted at women keep resisting the notion. Fill the damn thing up with bouncy, dancy, pop songs and watch the ratings shoot through the roof. You may not like it, but that's what iPods are for...

My thoughts exactly at nights, plus I have some colleges in the area I can easlity target (I know... they're not "permanent residents, so they're not included in the ratings, but they can be sold to). I do look at the Alt Charts, AAA charts, and the CHR charts and find songs that fit with the station. (Muse- "Starlight" is getting a GREAT response).

In my market, it has been shown that Rhythmic leaning titles haven't had much success before at all. Only just recently has Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna and the like made any sort of dent in the playlist, because they were surefire channel changers. If it wasn't Nickelback or Hinder or something crunchy, it didn't get much notice, because the audience never warmed up to it.. but now, some upbeat songs are gathering their attention.

I'll probably post another hour or two up here in the next few days. Thanks for the input!

Just out of curiosity, do you think you could post a sample hour of your morning drive? I'll try to post an hour or two of ours too, just for the heck of it. lol

Hot AC programmers, in general--en masse--dismissed the entire library of rhythmic CHR songs somewhere around 5 years ago. That was stupid--not because most of it wasn't trash (most of it was)--but because hidden within the trash pile were a handful of great tunes. Maybe a dozen songs a year that Hot AC should have been playing, but didn't. Multiply that by say, 5 years, and there are probably 60-or-so songs that you're STILL not playing, but SHOULD be. Your listeners know those songs, because they were punching buttons between CHR & your station back then. Now the task is to dig into the pile and find those songs. Yeah, as recurrents or recent oldies.

Good sample hour. Definitely got your own spin on the format, which is not a bad thing.

Wow, great musical approach to the Hot AC format. It seems you're leaning more Modern AC, and that's a good thing. I'd love to stream your station. What is it? This playlist is great and eclectic, and highlights some of the harder-edged Hot AC songs of the last six months as well as mixing in a couple of 80s and 90s gold tunes. Also hope to see more sample hours soon. :)
