San Antonio College Radio Excludes Blind Student

It's not available online, but KENS 5 did a story last night on a blind student at San Antonio College who has been told by the college she will be unable to take radio classes there, because the equipment at the college requires the user be able to see to use it properly.

The story included a Ross Palombo live shot from one of ESPN 1250's studios and an interview with Stephen Michael Kerr, who is blind and works the 3-7 weekday shift at Austin's Majic 95.5. Mr. Kerr demonstrated how he is able to use the touchscreen equipment at his station without difficulty, thanks to plexiglass overlays.

KSYM has even more problems. Students are starting to complain about the Third Coast Music Network idiots taking time slots away from students. Jim Beal and his commercial radio haters club are scrambling for ways to explain why they are not allowing tuition paying students on the station.

Several intersting letters have appeared in the SAC newspaper. I remember when KSYM was a farm team for SA commercial radio. It looks like the pendulum is finally swinging back in that direction. The current Station Manager John Onderdonk must go!

The school that Kenny Meyer(aka: "Muck") attended in Boston didn't tell him that being blind would be a problem. Kenny went on to become the producer for the long-running Larry Glick show on WBZ radio for many years and later hosted his own program as well.

This is VERY good news for that young student---once her attorneys are done, she'll be attending her radio class FREE OF CHARGE, and the school will be damned lucky if it stops there. What kind of imbecile would make that kind of ADA-triggering statement?!?!? IN fact while she's at it, this school doesn't appear to be fit to own a radio license---so file on that while you're at it and get it transferred to the local blind center! ;)

I say to her give em' hell!!!!!!! As a former blind broadcaster the equiptment can me made to work with various screen reading software... We ran ENCO automation which I was able to do my various task with ease.. I really don't know how many broadcaster are out there who are blind, but a lot of stations will not even give blind jocks a shot even if they are good..... CC1

the overnight guy at WBZ is legally blind, one of the overnight guys on WATD Marshfield MA is blind, we've come a long way from when you had to take transmitter readings by meter, figure out things by chart, and adjust things accordingly.

I think that young lady just hit the lottery.

Why are the Third Coast Music Network people "idiots?" Is it because they're adults supporting real music played by real Texans and not supported on commercial radio instead of the Rotting Scabs and Festering Boils played on every other college station? Or do you want them playing what all of the commercial stations are playing--huh, Clear Channel employee and Lowry Mays [EDIT]

Trying to get the conversation back on topic here.... Those people at SAC are idiots.... not only are they not doing the right thing... they're also liable to get their butts sued off. When I was in college some 35 years ago we had a blind operations manager. He worked the board by touch. With all the computer equipment these days, it should be much simpler. One of the top morning men here in Cleveland, Trapper Jack, is also blind. He seems to get by OK. Oh... and did I mention that radio is an AURAL medium????

Dear Mark: [EDIT] KRTU is a much better run operation than ksym will ever be. The turd coast music nitwits are a bunch of burnouts who could never make it in commercial radio.

College radio is for college students ,not 50 year old burnouts. The TCMN is an embarrassment.

More importantly, the taxpayer who pays taxes to the Alamo Community Colleges and the Administration is finally starting to take note of the internal problems at ksym. You also have the Feds getting involved now with the blind girl issue.

Please spread the word to jim beal and all the other amateurs, you're days are numbered. The students want their station back and this has nothing to do with Lowry Mays or Clear Channel. Get a clue!

Excuse me for not knowing, are there jocks on the air at KSYM that are not students?
If students are being denied airtime, then you have to act together and go upstairs. That is a terrible misuse of a college radio station. All it will take is for the parents, who most likely are paying the tuition, to call the school and ask what the **** is going on?

Does KUT-FM Austin have students on the air?
How about KUHF-FM in Houston?
A college-owned station is not necessarily student run.

The KENS report was a smidge misleading, don't you think? They never mentioned Kerr is in Austin and the graphic that ID'd him said he worked at KSMG, which is San Antonio's Majic station, not KKMJ.

Actually the first sound you hear in the recorded portion is Steve Kerr saying ''Majic 95.5.'' Later on you hear a jingle for ''Majic 95.5'' and still later on Steve mentions ''Austin's First Warn Weather forecast.''

The KSMG calls were probably added by someone at the station who wasn't totally familiar with the story. They also got his name wrong. It's KERR not KURR.

In the case of KUT it is certainly not. KUT-FM has precious little to do with any student at UT-Austin.

i wonder if this bling student saw it coming that they were going to be excluded?
