San Diego Alt Rockers

The two SD alt stations, 91X and FM949 continue to lead the nation with innovative programming. For instance within the last 24 hours XETRA has continued to break from the blasé textbook formula and played cuts by Iron Maiden, Jimi Hendrix and Johnny Cash. 949 airs a chill program every night. These are two great examples of commercial alternative rock radio at its very best. Both stations stream btw...

Iron Maiden - awesome
Jimi Hendrix - a god
Johnny Cash - legend is an understatement

You stay classy, San Diego.

I stumbled upon FM949 about a year ago and still listen very regularly online. Got my friend totally obsessed with them as well. A very solid alternative rock station, something we are certainly lacking on the airwaves here in Cleveland. We've emailed Garrett (FM949 PD) a few times and he's a really cool guy. Me and my buddy have often joked about taking a San Diego vacation just to be able to listen to FM949 on the radio.....well, that and to enjoy the nice weather and the "scenery" of course ;)

I was living in San Diego the very day FM 94/9 came on the air. I considered it a breath of fresh air. 91X at the time was a little too hard for my tastes. I do believe that 94/9 made 91X sound better.

San Diego used to have an alt-rock station called 92.5 the Flash. 94/9 patterns themselves after the Flash. Mike Halloran of 94/9 used to work for the Flash. When Clear Channel took 92.5 under its wings, they ditched the format so as not to compete with in-house 91X.<P ID="signature">______________

Right. But my question is, are they 100%, completely free from CC, or is "Finest City Broadcasting" affiliated with CC in any way.

Re: 91X

Finest City is a completely separate company from CC and 91x no longer has CC programming influence. 91x is going back to their roots and sounding great.
