Am I allowed to mention 95-7 KISS-FM needing to flip yet or will I be scolded again? ;D (Last time I was told by certain individuals that I need more patience for KSSX to build an audience but another book has come and the ratings are just as low)

Kiss FM Will never go up unless XHRM Changes format. And I don't understand why 93.3 and 90.3 are doing so good but not 103.7. They are live. 93. 3 is not a local station to me. It is KIIS FM 102.7

Perhaps live and local is not as important to the average listener as these messageboards seem to believe they are.

103-7 sounds stale IMO. They mix in too many slow songs that don't work well with the hot hits/energy format. There is a lot more energy at their sister station AMP Radio in LA. IMaybe that's why Chareze Fruge jumped ship? Creative differences??

Charlie Quinn has been experimenting with 103.7 for at least a dozen years and even before that - when it was The Planet - the in-house music director had not a clue. Apparently they can do KYXY okay, but any other format is beyond their ability.

94/9's ascension in the 6+ in recent months only proves that predictably the mainstream audience wants mainstream music and not (subjectively) good music.

In other words, music that most people don't like is good, but the music that most people enjoy is bad?

David....Are you really not able to discern that audience share and quality of a product can be on different trajectories? If one thinks that the sugary pop of say, Selena Gomez today, or Britney Spears over the past decade, are the "goodest" music in the land simply because they attract the masses, then that person obviously has both objective and subjective limitations. 94.9 has made a conscious decision to abandon much of what made its DNA originally more experimental; hence the preponderance now on its playlist of all the core alternative bands that can be heard on every other alt rock station - Green Day, Linkin Park, Beastie Boys, My Chemical Romance, Sublime, etc.

To use your mindset, if every station played it safe and only played the hits, then how would radio ever discover and break in new music? I’m not saying what you believe is not reflective of nearly every programmer in the land today, it simply reflects why radio has become dull, and why so many music aficionados (P1 listeners) now flock to other resources (online, satellite, music acquisition) to slate their thirst for “good” music.

To quote Steely Dan's FM, it's always "somebody else's favorite song."

Radio doesn't play something because it's new. Radio plays it if it's good. Good is defined by "a lot of people like this song."

If it's new and good, all the better, and yes, you should be breaking new titles surrounded by stronger established records... but you can't quit playing those stronger established records or else it all falls apart. It's spokes on a bike. The core artists keep people tuned in to hear the weaker artists until those new bands become the core artists that support the station while you break new ones. And the beat goes on.

Also: P1 listeners don't listen to hear 10 in a row they don't know. I worked in AAA. Okay, some P1's listen for that, but you can't pay the bills on a 0.8.

I know we have beaten this subject into the ground, but what does ClearChannel hold on to Cliff Albert? Goodness....even KFMB-AM with all of their syndicated talk shows is doing better.

I also love that KPBS-FM continues to be "owned" by Pastor John Young....and not SDSU Foundation
