SAN DIEGO ARBITRON RATINGS: FEBRUARY 2011

So when do we see the big boosts to KYXY and Jack from their JnJ and DSC morning shows, or has it already happened?

KPBS is going like gangbusters and is starting to challenge KOGO. I didn't think San Diego was an NPR kind of town and this should be interesting.

Do ratings matter for public radio stations?

Mainly in terms of how much CPB funding they'll get (it's been attached to minimum Arbitron ratings ever since the last "defund NPR" wave back in the mid-90s). And they consider the numbers along with pledge drive totals and other things, although ratings aren't the be-all and end-all. It is interesting to note in the PPM markets that there are more NPR news-talkers rising in the numbers--in almost every case purely off of the drive time news shows and not off of the music programing that surrounds the news shows (or even the various news and talk shows that are running during the day on more and more NPR stations).

Of course KPBS is fighting KOGO, they have a full news staff and are in glorious stereo FM not rolled off to 5 khz!! KOGO's audio is terrible.

The wonderful wide world of HDRadio makes AM sound so ... so ... what's the world I'm looking for ....

Crappy? Lol! There. I said it. Hahaha! All joking aside, when is CC going to wake up and give up on AM IBOC? Lots of other C companies have already turned what little they had of them OFF.

They won't. Part of the HDRadio group. I showed off my HDRadio this week. The consumer was not impressed; "that's it?"

Of course. What's the point? In addition to it not being a mobile "take it with you" technology (unlike the iPhone or wifi), IBOC isn't in every market. It's only in the big places. Cattle country? Nope! Streaming is everywhere, so is Satellite radio.

IBOC?
Nope!

I won't invest in a radio that I can't use. Those things are expensive; Rocks are free, and have about the same usefulness...
