SAN DIEGO ARBITRON RATINGS RELEASED: DECEMBER 2010

I bet KYXY wish it could be Christmas all year as they benefited nicely from the all-Christmas music, like many other AC stations across the country did.

Ill bet that KyXy wishes it could get back what it was when Yvonne Carlin was there!!! And they played good music! They fired Yvonne and the ratings were never the same!!

So, do these total audience ratings mean anything at all? Seems like whenever someone has commented on station rankings in these, someone else has pointed out that these particular numbers are useless for sales purposes and don't mean anything because the only thing that counts are target demo ratings.

That having been said, it would be interesting, for instance, to learn how KFMB-FM is doing in its target demo. Obviously the station overall is trending downward in overall AQH and Cume - not by much, granted, but still downward. So are they becoming the new KGB, making all of their money on the morning show and blowing off the rest of the day?

And, by the way, who was the "genius" who thought the current KGB lineup would sound good???? There may be some nice people behind the mikes there, but what comes through the mikes is lame.

Texas (and that's not you in Lubbock).

Yeah, poor KYXY, they are only Number 1 total audience with an AQH of 6.8 and cume of 715,000, while the dinosaurs at KOGO are getting 3.7 and 301,600.

I don't think any station in town gets much of a ratings impact from the night time shows and, again, KYXY really did not miss a beat. I'm not a fan of Charlie Quinn, but he has somehow kept KYXY quite viable and no doubt quite profitable. Even without Christmas music, their audience size is nothing to scoff at.

KOGO is the place that needs to worry: Hedgecock was once a local draw but he has made himself a non-entity. Doctor Laura, hated by liberals, is regularly derided on this board, but her departure will create a deep hole. Ladona will start from scratch to build something in that time slot and the Dr. Laura audience will have no interest whatsoever in Ladona's act.

While one is talk and the other music, KYXY and KOGO both have strong legacies in the market and are contrasts in how to preserve and enhance that which has served you so well. If there are any thinking people with power at KOGO, they'd do well to look to KYXY for tips on how to stay strong.

It's not really "target" demos but "sales demos." In general, that means 18-49 and 25-54 or some subset of those. Under 18 and over 55 are fairly valueless for sales.

That's also why Arbitron gives away the 12+ or 6+ ratings data, but charges hundreds of thousands for the rest of the data and closely monitors unauthorized use of the data.

Because 18 through 54 is where the ad dollars are, stations target some portion of that demo in an effort to make their audience marketable to advertisers.

That having been said, it would be interesting, for instance, to learn how KFMB-FM is doing in its target demo.

It's tied for 6th in 25-54, down from second a few months ago but well above the 15th range it was in at the start of the year. This month is not a good measure of adult stations because of the Christmas music on "the competition" which added several share points, some of which came from KFM FM
