San Diego Needs An Urban (Or Urban AC)

San Diego does need a true urban station. Not even Blazin' 98.9 or Z90 is an urban station, but they're both CHR-rhythmic. TVRadioWorld & Inside Radio/M Street list them as urban but Blazin' 98.9 is a pure CHR-rhythmic station, according to R&R. San Diego's missing either an urban or urban AC station.
Edited by PassDutch on 09/10/05 12:17 AM.

Why that wont happen

I disagree. If the 4(count 'em) station in San Diego that play Urban music don't appeal to you, might i suggest satellite radio?

The real reason it won't happen is the black population in San Diego is relatively small. The type of rhythmic stations that exist in San Diego are a better fit for the markets demographics and ethnic composition than a "real" urban. Some of the songs on the Urban chart, especially the pure R&B/non hip-hop, don't go over very well on the West coast.

An excellent point, and one that has been true for a long time now.

In the mid-80s, I was with KMYX in the Oxnard-Ventura market. We were an Urban station but tended only to play songs that had crossed from Urban to CHR ... or at least only artists that had crossover success.

Urban songs that crossover to CHR do tend to do well -- now as then -- with young Hispanics, which likely explains why the existing San Diego Urbans are programmed with a similar philosophy as KMYX two decades ago.
______________
