San Diego Padres broadcasters

I originally posted this as a reply on the Phoenix television board, but thought I would also post it on the San Diego board


As I was driving back to Phoenix from San Diego today, I listened to the Diamondbacks-Padres game on the Padres network...first on am 1090 out of San Diego, then when I crossed over into the Imperial Valley...I picked it up on 1230 KXO out of El Centro. Jerry Coleman and Ted Lietner were the broadcasters. I know Coleman has been a Padres broadcaster for many years, but he made a lot of mistakes today. He kept calling the Diamondbacks "Colorado." He later said the Padres lost the first two games of the road trip, but a win today would give them a 5-1 trip. (Huh?)

Lietner wasn't much better. (My wife called him "different.") He called the rattle snake hissing sound made on the Chase Field P.A. system "about as annoying as the tomahawk chop is for the Atlanta Braves in Atlanta."

He also said that the arena next door used to be called America West Arena, but the name was changed when America West Airlines bought out US West (which is the phone company.) It's called US Airways Center.

I'd rather stick with the Diamondback broadcasters, both on radio and t.v.

San Diegans are used to mistakes. Their biggest was allowing the construction of a freeway from Phoenix to San Diego.

Jerry Coleman is up there, still quality though. But he is "the voice," oh doctor!
As for Ted, he's an acquired taste. Either you like his goofing off, or you really don't.

And let's face it, for years, Padres fans needed a "pick-me-up." When your team is losing 14-0, you better have some great stories to tell your audience. Ted and Jerry are good at that.
 
There will be a new English-radio broadcast team in the next couple of years. Writing the un-thinkable, Jerry needs to enjoy some retirement. Ted may be an acquired taste; but it's getting a bit old. As for the Padres season, best left to professionals, and this year's team isn't worthy of the ole PCL.
 
Speaking of the old PCL how many can remember Al Schuss (sp?) and his teletype game recreations, "there's the look, the windup and the pitch" thonk "and there it goes!" (recorded crowd roar) along with Al Couppee. It took me years to realize the games weren't live - the Al's were very good.

First from all wood Lane Field over looking the Santa Fe station, so when the games were bad you could watch the trains and then, later from eucalyptus shaded Westgate Park.

Couppee could mangle the words, my favorite Couppee blunder was when he repeatedly called the Padres the "Pozres" - eliciting much laughter and hooting from the Westgate Park fans with portable radios.

I can no longer remember who carried the PCL Padres - KFSD/KOGO 600 or 540 KFMB, maybe both from time to time.

Ah, yes, Al Couppee with the sports of the day. He was a tad before my time.

I grew up in the era of John DeMott at the stadium P.A. microphone announcing "Number 11, Enzo Hernandez."

I never listened to baseball way back when but I sure remember Al Couppee's TV sportscasts on Channel 10 (he did baseball on KOGO, which had been co-owned with Channel 10 at one time). I recall he sort of barked out the sports news much like a drill Sergeant giving commands. Al, by the way, was a legend in Iowa sports from his days as quarterback of the Univ. of Iowa football team of 1939. He played one year (1946) for the Washington Redskins. Al was gone from San Diego broadcasting by the mid-70's when he was for political office against Assemblyman Larry Kapiloff (and lost).
 
Gawd, I LOVED Westgate Park! It's a shame, considering the small crowds the first NL Padres wound up drawing, that they couldn't have moderately expanded Westgate, but Fashion Valley had to be built. I think Robinson's/Robinson-May is right around where third base was. Last time I was at the mall, there were still traces of the Westgate parking lot, including the eucalyptus trees, that had been blended into the the mall's parking lot.

When the PCL Padres went Major League in 1969, the radio rights were held by KOGO (600), and were carried over when the conversion was made. Both versions of the Padres were owned by C. Arnholdt Smith.

After the PCL left San Diego, Al Schuss entered the real estate business. I never met him, but other media types in SD who did told me he was a very nice man, but angry that he wasn't included as part of the major league announcer team.

KCBQ's John DeMott was an above-average PA announcer, but I wouldn't have relied on him as a great sports source. I liked the way he announced the Padres' entrance on the field (...and now, ...HERE COME THE PADRES!!, and then rapid-fire announce each player's name & position, saving the pitcher for last). The fans ate it up. As a sports talk show host, let's just be kind and say that he made a lot of mistakes, and leave it at that.

If you ever find a channel somewhere that shows reruns of the old Jackie Cooper Navy sitcom "Hennessey", there is an episode that was filmed at Westgate Park. I'd love to be able to record it. Availability, anyone?
 
I just happened on this While I was looking for PCL padres stats from the 60's. I listened to the Padres on the radio in the 60's and enjoyed a few games at Westgate park. I loved those trees behind the fence. It was a beautiful park. I recently purchased team photos from '65 and '67 that show the chain-link fence and the trees on the hill. I had no idea that a television series had an episode filmed there. That would be great to see if it still exists. Do you have an idea ,anyone ,where I could get individual player stats for the PCL padres from the 60's-thanks.,
