Ryan Seacrest becomes the new host of American Top 40 after Casey Kasem quits so he can host a countdown show for adult contemporary listeners and not compete against himself anymore.

US 95.7 playing country music launches, replacing KOOL Oldies, which moves to 99.3, replacing Bob 99.3 Country. Tony and Kris join US 95.7 for mornings.

KOCL changed calls to KUSS.

"Red @ 104.1 – Music with Class" Signs on in St. Louis.

Janet Jackson's indecent exposure causes a chain reaction of fearing the wrath of an FCC fine, leading up to Clear Channel cancelling The Howard Stern show from all of its radio stations including Rock 105.3.

Rick Dees is fired from KIIS-FM after 23 years. Ryan Seacrest takes over mornings.

XESS on 780kHz was launched to cause interference with stations in Nevada and New Mexico.

XHMORE 98.9 flips from Rock en Espanol to Hip Hop music.

XPRS begins broadcasts of the San Diego Padres.

Spanish AC XHLTN 104.5 was sold to Imagen Informativa.

KURS 1040 flips from Spanish language to talk.

XHATE 95.3 boosts its power. New call letters: XHHIT.

KCEO 1000 dumps Premium for The Owl nostalgic music.

The Mikey Show replaces Howard Stern on Rock 105.3.

Three Bonilla stations flip frequencies by agreement with the SCT and FCC. XEKTT from 560 to 1700 kHz, 10 kW fulltime. XESS from 780 to 620 kHz, 5 kW fulltime. XESDD from 920 to 1030 kHz, 5 kW fulltime.

Howard Stern returned to San Diego on Planet 103.7 four months after Clear Channel dumped him off of KIOZ.

A pirate at 106.9 FM surfaces.

KPOP 1360 flips format to KLSD carrying Air America.

KURS 1040 flips to The Soul of San Diego.

Another pirate station, KQER 98.5, signed on playing dance mixes. It went dark shortly afterwards.

Stacy Taylor moves from KOGO to KLSD. Mark Larson moves from KCBQ to KOGO.

105.7 from Tecate is testing.

XSURF 540 switched from adult standards to oldies.

Spanish-language 102.9 morphs from K-Love to Viva.

Dave and Jeff join XESPN 800.

KCEO adds reruns of the late Wolfman Jack radio show nightly.

The Third Circuit Court of Appeals granted the FCC's request to allow counting JSA stations in a company's total within a market as they continue review of the numerical ownership limits. This means that Clear Channel San Diego had to divest its interest of programming AM 690, FM 90.3, 91.1, 92.5, and 99.3 within two years. Clear Channel had to "sell" its two Temecula radio stations to "Clear Channel Inland Empire." Clear Channel Los Angeles also had to cease its JSA with the two-station Indie 103.1 format in Los Angeles. In 2005: Clear Channel moved XTRA from 690 Tijuana and 1150 Los Angeles to 570 Los Angeles. It debuted Air America programming on 1150. It moved Fabulous music from 570 to 690.

KFI 640 started IBOC operation.

A pirate at 105.7 in Lakeside was greeted by a legal team from KWVE whose signal was being rebeamed without permission and was served a cease and desist order or legal action would be pursued. That station went dark.

Grossmont College's radio station at 89.1 was shut down for illegal operations.

A Spanish language pirate on 96.9 operated from Oceanside for a short period.

Howard Stern announces that he's moving to Sirius satellite beginning in January 2006.

A pirate on 98.5 FM operates from Clairemont.

KGBB 103.3 shifts to its own rock programming as Q103. KMYT 94.5 shifts to smooth jazz.

XEBNC moved from 92.1 Ensenada to 105.7 in Tecate, months after a Lakeside pirate on 105.7 shut down.

The upper half of the KSON-AM tower collapses in heavy winds, knocking KSON-AM, KURS-AM, and KBNT-17, off the air.
