If Anyone Else Getting SD Station But I Am Using My HD Radio Tuner

I live in the OC and I do not pick up 91x. I wish! Every time I drive to San Diego, I listen to 91x. Great station!

I have always wondered what caused this phenomenon. I recently took a trip to LA last month. One of the days I was there I got 91x CLEAR in Los Angeles county (Carson) and also up to I-5 near the valley! I even got 94-9 KBZT as well! The next day I tried to tune these two stations in, the same places and got static. Not sure if it's atmospheric conditions or what! I also remember the last time I had been to CA back in 1999 I stayed in Dana Point and I recall the same SD stations coming in better than the LA stations, and 91x also coming in clear up to Venice Beach.

Marine tropo?

It's funny because the same thing happens to me with 91X! I always get it in my car stereo when it feels like it at my house in Tustin. But when I drive down just a few miles south, it comes in clear as a bell! But sometimes when I drive into North OC/LA it comes in clear as well! I'm sure OC could get full coverage of 91.1 if it weren't for that dang religious station that's in the way. :-\

I can receive 91x clearly here in Culver City - at night. I feel ya with that religious station. lol

When I was an UCLA student years ago, on hot summer days I could pick up almost every San Diego radio station crystal clear in my dorm. I remember sometimes 92.5 would bleed into 92.3!! But it only lasted some days and usually on hot, clear days only. It has to have been due to atmospheric conditions. The same thing would happen with San Diego TV channels.

Here in Azusa, I can get some SD stations on summer days. With IBOC and HD interference, I don't know if that's still the case. I'll have to see what happens this summer.

You're going to have problems getting 94.9 thanks to the iBlock on 94.7 (The Wave). Their digital carriers extend all the way down to 94.9MHz effectively burying a first-adjacent station in co-channel noise. And if you think it's bad now wait for the power increase.

As for 91X I can't say. It may be a temporary thing with the weather (as in we're getting weather). Living in Huntington Beach I've always found 91X to be a good companion station to KROQ. :D

Those San Diego signals come in better during the summer, due to heat inversion. It has to do with heat and high humidity. Unlike tropo conditions, heat inversions can remain in place for days or weeks at a time (although it may vary depending on time of day).

There’s also another similar condition called ducting.

In both cases, the signal is bent and creates reception over long distances.

I just had to say, you are right on the HOTPLATE with your comments, EasyBakeOven. BTW - I dig that name ;D EasyBakeOven

As a San Diegan visiting in LA once I was surprised to hear 101.5 coming in in downtown LA clear as a bell. It does seem to be the atmospherics of so. California. As a kid living in SD we could not get SD TV stations, the mountain blocked the signals, but we got the LA TV stations fine and most of the time got Santa Barbara's channel 3 too.
