Is FCC going to open up more TV allocation for San Diego?
Since San Deigo doesn't have alot of alot TV allocation. It only has 6.
KFMB 8, KGTV 10, KPBS 15, KNSD 39, KUSI 51, KSWB 69
I wouldn't count on it...
Right now there's a freeze on petitions to add new channels to the table. I'm sure the FCC will lift that freeze eventually, but I think they're going to want to do a few things first:
- Make sure all the full-power stations have settled into suitable assignments - that nobody else is going to need to be changing assignments.
- Get all the low-power and Class A stations converted to digital. (I expect they will set a drop-dead date for LP conversion this spring, and I suspect that drop-dead date will be in mid-2011.) Existing Class A stations will have priority over new full-power allotments.
- Decide whether any more spectrum will be removed from TV and handed over to land-mobile.
- Make sure Mexico (and Canada) have firmed up their plans.
**Wild guess** is that it'll be 3-5 years before they consider petitions to add channels.
When that does happen... it's going to be VERY difficult to find UHF channels for new assignments. If there had been any available in analog, someone would have been using them -- and the digital transition didn't make any more. Given the proximity to LA and Tijuana and Mexicali, I think it's very likely there simply will be no available UHF or VHF-high channels for new assignments in San Diego. Where I think there *will* be room is on low-band VHF -- where of course nobody really wants to be...
