San Francisco AM Stations

I'm just wondering have anyone in the East Coast got any SF Stations in thoug E-skips like

560 KSFO
610 KEAR
680 KNBR
740 KCBS
810 KGO
910 KNEW
960 KKGN
1050 KCTC
1100 KFAX
1550 KFRC

KNBR has been heard here in Central Kentucky right before sunrise after WPTF fades...

KNBR used to be semi-regular here in the Chicago area with the local 670 blowtorch nulled. Haven't heard it quite some time, however.

No. I never have heard these stations on the East coast. The farthest I heard was KOA 850 in Denver.

Not likely anymore. I've heard WBBM in Phoenix on rare occasions, but Chicago's blowtorch frequencies are all occupied by western stations (670 LA, Denver, & Boise, 720 Las Vegas, 780 Reno, & 890 St. George), and have been since the '70s.

Unfortunately what Keith said is true.

I remember getting a good signal on a routine basis from WLS back in the late 70s and early 80s in the SF Bay Area. I don't know how strong 890 from St. George comes in where you are but you may want to listen in the background for WLS.

It's not a case where the Chicago signals aren't making it out there anymore, it's just that the stronger closer stations on the same frequencies now make them very difficult to detect.

I used to listen to WLS-890 from Chicago every night back in the early 1960's in Riverside, CA (50 miles east of LA). How many of you remember Clark Weber's "East of Midnight" program with the "Silver Dollar Survey"???

Great radio, great times back then...when the clear channels were really CLEAR at night.

Before KDXU St. George came on (1974?), WLS was easily heard in most of the west during the winter. WGN and WBBM were also a regulars pre-KDWN & KKOH. WMAQ, not so much since KBOI was dominant even then, before they killed their southward signal about 10 years ago.

But there is no need whatsoever for "clear channel" stations anymore. Nobody at the Chicago stations (except for maybe the engineers) cares if we can hear them in Phoenix or LA. Besides, since they all stream, we can hear them that way. The "38 states and Canada" days are long gone. In fact, that kind of coverage has been irrelevant for over 50 years, since the smaller markets started getting their own stations in the '50s.

In the early '80s, I used to hear WGN and WLS fairly regularly at night driving the Bayshore freeway. They were under KDWN and KDXU respectively when those were the only other stations on those channels.

WLS could easily be heard in Southern California into the mid 80s until KDXU became 24 hours. In the late 70s & early 80s KDXU signed off late at night allowing WLS to still be heard well in California.

Back in the late 1990's when I lived in SoCal I could pick up WGN early Monday morning when KDWN had their transmitter shut down between 1-5AM. Also, I was back then able to receive WHO's signal from Des Moines while nulling out a station south of the border on 1040.

I'm getting CBS Radio on 890

I went to the KDXU site, it said ABC news

Well, it's not WLS because they too have ABC news.

Actually, a quick look at CBS Radio News' website indicates that KDXU does carry CBS newscasts. So, it's most likely that you caught KDXU - which is what I generally catch when I am in the Bay Area too.

Here's what SF stations I've gotten here in Bothell, WA.

560 KSFO: Kinda hard except wee hours, because KPQ Wenatchee, WA takes up most of the channel.
610 KEAR: Only caught once. KONA Pasco, WA, KRTA Medford, OR and CKYL Peace River, AB fight for the channel mostly here.
680 KNBR: Every night. 50 kw blowtorch clear channel.
740 KCBS: Fights w/ CBX Edmonton most nights. I've heard it at my hometown and in Yakima, WA.
810 KGO: Clear channel, so every night.
860 KTRB: Never heard it. It's KPAM Troutdale, OR and CFPR Prince Rupert, BC here.
910 KNEW: Heard a handful of times, but most times it's covered by CKDQ Drumheller, AB and KTRO Vancouver, WA.
960 KKGN: Never.
1010 KIQI: Never.
1050 KTCT: Heard a number of times. But it's usually covered in a mess of stations.
1100 KFAX: Every night. Sometimes fights w/ KFNX Cave Creek, AZ and KNZZ Grand Junction, CO.
1190 KDYA: I've tried for it at sunset, but to no avail here. Sunset, it's KEX Portland, OR and sometimes CFSL Weyburn, SK.
1260 KSFB: Never, CFRN Edmonton, AB or a mess here.
1310 KMKY: Never. Mess here, KLIX Twin Falls, ID, etc.
1400 or 1450: Never
1510 KPIG: Might have caught it weakly under KGA at night. But it could be something else. Need to listen more.
1550 KFRC: Mostly, every other night, give or take. Fights w/ KKAD Portland, OR.
1640 KDIA: Mostly every night, fighting w/ KDZR Portland, OR and rarely KBJA Sandy, UT.

Response to the other post about the CBS on 890: Now that KDXU is CBS, my CBS News on 890 was KDXU! I thought it was ABC. Must have switched networks recently.
