I remember the final night of KSFX quite well. A friend of mine taped the final hours, and I'd kill (figuratively) for a copy of that tape. Richard Gossett was on until the sign-off at 5AM. At that point, there was ABC news followed by Jim Dunbar doing his talk show on KGO-AM. KGO-FM lasted about two or three years and became KLOK-FM. He played a lot of great rock tracks such as "No Train to Heaven" by Be Bop Deluxe. The final eleven days were rather "free-form" sounding, but prior to those days, KSFX was a rather mainstream sounding AOR station, not unlike KLOS in Los Angeles.

KSFX flipped back to rock sometime in early 1981. They had been drifing towards AOR since the fall of 1980, just after KSAN went Country. Their Morning Drive host was Steven Capin, formerly of KSAN. I'm too young to remember the "San Francisco Experience Prog Rock days of KSFX (I'm also aware of the KGO-FM "Love" format as well as its Hot 100 predecessor. But I'm sure the Progressive San Francisco Experience was awesome. I know that format died around May 1973 or so, only to be replaced by Top 40, then Soul, Disco, Adult Contemporary and then AOR again.

Hey, Allison, what do you know about the short-lived Earth Rock 108 (KXOA-FM) in Sacramento? Perhaps we ought to migrate over to the Sacramento board on that one !!

Dunbar did not do a "talk show" -- he did the morning news with Ted Wygant.

I have about 16 hours of recordings from the last several days of KSFX, including the last few hours (and the start of the KGO AM/FM simulcast). On the other hand, the predictions are sometimes entertaining, and ....let's face it - there's not much big radio-related news on a daily basis. That "No FM Talker" prediction was part of a string of interesting posts that I enjoyed reading.

106.9 CHR within a few months.

I dont like predictions either. "just the facts maam'
