San Francisco Needs a Classic Hits Station

The San Francisco Bay Area needs a solid Classic Hits station. The classic hits format can succeed in San Francisco with just the right mix of 60s, 70s and 80s music. All we need is a group of people dedicated to this music to get this station started.

Re: San Francisco Needs an all Russian station.

I noticed with a growing Russian population......plus the established Russian Hill section, the Bay Area could use a Russian station. Any thoughts? _________________.

Classic rock has been done before by so many stations (some stations more than once) and in so many ways
and for many years!

Yes. Can a classic hits station with pop, rock and soul from the 60s, 70s and 80s succeed today in San Francisco?

How do you say "NO" in Russian? (to Russian music on the radio)

"neyt"

Actually, its "nyet."

I was thinking we could have a format for local Russian immigrants to call in and vote thumbs up or down on their favorite Russian language hits. We could call it "Da/Nyet Radio," or: да нет радио.

Natasha & Boris in the morning, Moose & Squirrel in the afternoon, da? приветствия! (Nasdrovia!) Classic Hits, as most people know, is a different format than Classic Rock.

Obviously radio dx hasn't been schooled in the finer formats like TOP-40 a la KFRC/KYA from the 70's...Classic Rock ain't Classic Hits and a successful Classic Hits was not close to the abortion known as 106.9 KFRC. The only thing right about that station was the on-air talent! Everything else was wrong from the music to the jingles to the v/o and the promotions. The Band, or should I say the BLAND is doing moderately well simply because the door was open. Entercom PLEASE shut the door on the BLAND by flipping The Wolf (that's lost it's Howl - and it's PD) to a CLASSIC HITS. Even with a challenged 95.7 signal it could have an impact that would generate both ratings and revenue. We need to hear The Beatles, Supremes, Elton, The Stones, Motown, Creedence, Stevie Wonder and others from 65 - 72 with energy and vitality NOT in a BLAND formatic approach. Why do you think KRTH, WCBS, WOGL, KOLA and other Classic Hits/Oldies stations are kickin' ass? Because they play the Greatest HIts of All Time! PERIOD!

Ok. I'm done now. Bye.

Yes, an exciting classic hits station on the FM dial is a fine idea. Right now 95.7 the Wolf needs to be given a few more months to see how they do. The Wolf is doing decently compared to Live 105. Live 105 does have a high number of listeners though.

How about a full-time Chinese FM radio station since San Francisco has at least 40% Chinese population in the city and about 22% in the Bay Area. Hey we have at least 3 Chinese TV station and a local daily Cantonese and Mandarin Newscast.

You know what ? .......good idea, but my bleeding heart side tells me we need a radio station for the homeless.....it's a sad but growing population in this market, especially for the bums that prefer to live on the street. What Clear Channel or Salem needs to do is donate a frequency like 1450, or more like 1510 (that type of audience I'm sure would understand or they would be hypocrites,) and have a playlist that consist of songs like "I'm Busted" Ray Charles, "Mr. Bo Jangles" Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, etc, plus...constant announcements on where to get free cheese, free cardboard, free syringe needles and so forth. The only problem with this format is...it would be hard sell ....hahahahahaha....hard sell...get it, hahahahaha...any thoughts hahahahhahahaha (fading out )

Here's the deal Classic Hits is a dying format, In Fresno we have KHIT they are now streaming check them out , heres the thing we also have KABX, both have very low ratings KHIT 1.1 and KABX .9 but MEGA97.9 R & B oldies does well, same with KJFX Classic rock 95.7. It to a point either you like R&B or like to Rock. KFRC was a disaster but had good DJ's , KJWL99.3 in Fresno was a Nostalsia station and also started to play more 70s and 80s and they are down lower, Maybe the Bland could play more Mainstream and let KSAN take care of the Harder Classic rock, I know KRTH and WCBS seems to work well, but what will work in other markets, thats the question.

What does get lost with station separating oldies by genre , are those pop song not heard anymore, I was listening on KABX 97.5 on Sunday Kasey Casem's retro 70s and there are so many hit I heard I havent heard in years, even KHIT and KABX plays those BIG hits in a heavy rotation , about the same 200 songs and gets stale, the mainstrean gets left out by Classic rock and R&b oldies that are now playing MC Hammer and Tone loc, A well mainstream oildies with a explaned playlist would be good.

This format is all about the music you play and how you present it!

There's bad 60's, 70's and 80's music and there's good! KRTH, KOOL, WCBS, KONO, The Walrus all do very well because they sound great, the DJ's are in to it, and they play good, fun music!

In this format, listeners can tell if a station is "in to it" and committed, or not?

I'm convinced that the Bay Area would respond very favorably to a station that sounded like the ones mentioned above.

KFRC should not be used as a yardstick on this one!

Look at The Band!....They suck...boring, predictable and very stale....yet starting to get numbers! (I think only because they are the as close as listeners can get to Classic Hits on the dial, at this point)

First one to do this format right in the Bay....Wins big!

Better music mix of pop, rock, & soul, and live personalities 6a-7p that actually like the music. Interaction with the P-1s on the web and even phone, promotion...going out and shaking hands and kissing babies. People want to be part of a community, look at Facebook and Myspace. Great radio provides not only great entertainment, but a sense of belonging. Chances are slim to none that Clear Channel gets this, or will spend the relatively modest dollars to implement it.

So what would "Classic Hits" do that "The Band" doesn't? Sincere question.

At the very least, play more cuts of a popular band besides their usual "standards."

Example: Pink Floyd is known for other songs besides those from Dark Side of the Moon.

Best way to answer that is to just stream one or all of the stations I mentioned and listen to them for a little bit! You'll see exactly what I and others on here are saying!
