San Francisco/San Jose Arbitron Ratings: December 2012

Age 6+ overall publicly released data:

San Francisco: http://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb009

San Jose: http://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb215

The December 2012 survey period covers Thu. 11/8/12-Wed. 12/5/12.

The next survey period will be for Holiday 2012 covering Thu. 12/6/12-Wed. 1/2/13 with the report release date being Tue. 1/22/13.

KOIT sure isn't the dominant December giant anymore. Is Christmas music losing its appeal or is this more of the decline of KOIT?

SAN FRANCISCO: A New King Of The Hill
With CHRISTMAS music wafting through the airwaves, leave it to KQED INC N/T KQED to score its best number since MARCH (5.7-6.0) and return to the top spot for the first time since JUNE. Not that the sound of sleigh bells jingling went unnoticed. ENTERCOM AC KOIT went up the chimney from #5 to land in a tie at #2 (4.3-5.4) with the solid and steady CBS RADIO News KCBS-A (5.4-5.4), which moved up a notch.

Re-read the first post - the "December" survey period covers 11/8-12/5/12.
I'm sure that KOIT was in Christmas mode for only part of that 4-week period.

KOIT's share numbers will be higher for the "Holiday" period covering 12/6/12-1/2/13.

The somewhat more important data from the above-linked article are the demo breakouts:

Age 25-54:

2. 1. KQED
T3. 2. KSOL
6. 3. KOIT
7. T4. KYLD
T4. KIOI
T3. 6. KMVQ
1. T10. KNBR

Age 18-34:

1. 1. KMEL
2. 2. KYLD
4. 3. KSOL
3. 4. KMVQ
17. T5. KOIT
5. 16. KNBR

Age 18-49:

up 1. KQED
5. T2. KYLD
6. T2. KSOL
3. T4. KMEL
8. T4. KOIT
1. T12. KNBR

KOIT flipped to Xmas later this year than in Past years. About 7-10 days later. Could have cost them #1 in 25-54 which they used to win 25-54 and 6+.

KMEL has managed to hold on to its core audience age dominance in spite of dropping to the lower top ten portion. That is a contrast to reaching #1 in ratings back in the summer for the first time based on its current 25-year format, while its heritage urban counterparts WGCI, WWPR, WUSL and WJLB have suffered a continuous setback of not being in the top 10, if not #1 to top 5 for sometime.

I am curious about where KBLX still ranks among its 25-54 age demo even after no longer being a top 10 station overall as of two years ago.

In terms of days before Christmas Day, KOIT flipped about the same time this year as last, but Thanksgiving Day came a week earlier this year so instead of flipping the weekend before Thanksgiving KOIT flipped a day before Thanksgving.

Traditionally KOIT turned on Xmas music Nov. 15-17. In 2011 they went a few days later and were down in December from the year before. In 2012 they flipped 11/21 and were rated lower than 2011. Those are facts. The question is whether this downward pattern is due to the later starts or because they are not programming as well as before.
I would suggest that the Xmas format track was losing steam but rating around the country have been as good or better.

In 2011 KOIT's December 6+ PPM AQH share was 5.4; compared to their 5.9 this year, statistically the same number. When the Holiday month comes out in three weeks, another comparison can be made.

Actually Thanksgiving only came 2 days earlier this year. But KOIT switched to Christmas a week later than they normally do. They could have had a bigger December book if they'd flipped sooner.

In 2013, Thanksgiving comes 6 days later on Nov 28. KOIT can't afford to wait a week to flip to Christmas this year. KOIT would do well to make the switch the weekend before Thanksgiving, Nov 22 or 23. Just my opinion since I'm not a radio consultant! :)

How is 95.7 THE GAME (KGMZ-FM) is holding up? How are they doing in sales, and ratings in the demo?

Yes, I would love to know the ratings in the demo for 95.7. While KNBR is crushing them in overall, whenever it's brought up on their FB page, they always come back with the retort of "we're doing great in our demo which is all that counts." Of course, no one seems to know what that is. And if the A's fall back to earth, which many have predicted, I can't see them being around for more than another year without significant changes in their line-up.

I agree with most people that the Rise Guys are decent, especially when compared to Murph and Mac or Radnich. However, as with everything on 95.7, they repeat themselves way too much and rely on those silly gimmicks to spark empty debate about a topic they just spent 20 minutes covering.

I also agree with the comments about the other current shows. Lund doesn't seem to be able to talk intelligently about any topic. Most of the things I've heard him say have just been things repeated that he must have gotten from the daily paper or whatever was on ESPN that morning. And Papa, as good as he is on TV, which isn't that much, is just downright creepy as a sports talk host. He sounds as if he got his whole shtick from listening to too much Radnich. The pop culture references are mind numbing.

Townsend on his own in the evenings was good. He would cover a wide range of topics, let a few listeners drive some content, and didn't rely on gimmick segments every 20 minutes. Now paired with Bucher in the drive slot, he's painful to listen to. Bucher brings him down to a ridiculous level where they sound like 12 year olds talking about fart jokes with laughing every 10 seconds, more daily empty segments like "G-spot", and all the yelling.

Guy Haberman is like bologna on wonder bread... the picture of bland.

Of course, all these problems are the fault of Jason Barrett, their PD. The overused segments, the constant screaming, never taking calls or cutting off the ones they actually do get. It's amazing how he fails to realize this, but then again, I understand him to be a NY transplant and they apparently believe blowhard, attention deficit radio will play here. We all know it didn't work for Tierney who is mercifully gone.

If anyone has the demo breakdowns for KNBR and KGMZ, it would be interesting to see them and finally know if they are for real or just blowing smoke.

Since KGMZ is only averaging a 0.9 in 6+ over the past 6 months, you can assume they're lying when they say "we're doing great in our demo." Even if you break it down to "Weekends Men 25-49" or whatever, KGMZ is still going to be around a 1 share. Same place they've been since they debuted almost 2 years ago. They've only seen their ratings increase (slightly) when both baseball teams were in the playoffs and the 49ers were in the super bowl.
