Interesting that kksf is tied with ksfo ,,of course both down in the basement. I would think kksf would be doing better.

KKSF has a weak signal. In the winter it's even worse since they have to lower power at sunset.

KKSF 910 (the former KNEW, KEWB, KLX) has an excellent 20kw daytime signal and reaches from Healdsburg south to Gilroy. But at sunset they have to switch to a directional 5kw signal that covers just the internal part of the Bay Area from their transmitter at the foot of Central Avenue in Richmond (it's the two towers on the bay that you see west of the Eastshore freeway when you're around El Cerrito, Richmond, etc.

I've heard a clear signal in San Ramon daytime and heard it drop down to totally unlistenable at sunset.

In the Bay Area the official power change sunset times range from 8:30pm in June to 4:45pm in December. Right now the sunset time is 5:15pm. It changes on the first day of each month. I know because I used to work at a daytime only station where my summer shift was 8 1/2 hours and my winter shift was 4 3/4 hours!

So, it doesn't surprise me that KKSF 910's audience would shrink during the winter months.

we keep hearing that these "rough" ratings don't tell the complete story,so how did KGO do during 9AM-12 Noon M-F ?

Also I thought Cumulus wanted to turn this station into NEWS & INFORMATION, how come they still do talk during the week, unless that 3 hour period is keeping the station afloat at a 2.7 "rough" share ?

How is KGO doing on weekends when they do mostly talk, compared to weekdays ?

How does KGO do at night after 7PM M-F ?

In most formats, and especially in talkradio, neither nights nor weekends count enough for the station or the advertisers to care. This is why most station automate after 7pm and why most talk stations do specialty shows (which are largely infomercials) on the weekends.

Maybe they will introduce 'Fresh 96.5'

Hope not - bad idea. Like it or not, "KOIT" is a longtime Bay Area brand and has local meaning and cachet. Rebranding with some typical generic brand would not improve their ratings. And I think CBS owns the right to "Fresh" so they'd presumably have to pay something to use it in the Bay Area.

KOIT secured the rights, in the Bay Area, to the 'Fresh' name when that format first came out.

How does one "reserve the right" to a name for use in radio? Just curious, educate me.

The assumption is that CBS trademarked the "Fresh" brand, then KOIT offerred to pay CBS a fee for exclusive use of the name in the San Francisco market. In much the same way, you couldn't use "Kiss FM" as a brand in any market without getting permission from Clear Channel and paying for its use. The presumption there is that CC has owned the "Kiss FM" brand since it bought KIIS-FM in the 90s and trademarket it. But I don't know if anybody has ever posted that they know all this for certain - so it's speculation.

There was a case in the 80s. Little KTIM-FM in Marin County decided to switch to a Smooth Jazz format and used "The Wave" brand. The owners of 94.7 The Wave in LA (not sure if it was CBS then or not, yet) sued the owners of KTIM, which fought it for awhile, then re-branded as "The Tide."

There was a period of time when the KOIT bumpers said something like "more fresh light rock with less talk..." But KOIT has never used "Fresh" beyond that.

Thanks for the information. Now that you say it, I remember the bumpers "more fresh light rock with less talk..."

The same way Kleenex or Coca Cola protects their brands... with a service mark registration.

Stations used to register service marks in their state of operation. But with the Internet, every station is national or even international. So companies register brands nationally. THis is why you see one company calling lots of stations by the same name... because they own the brand.

Some stations that used a brand, like "Kiss", prior to it being nationally registered have managed to keep the usage in small areas due to prior usage.

"Kiss" was a CA service market for a while, and then at some point it was also registered as a national brand, grandfathering those few "Kiss" operations that predated the registration. "Kiss" has been licensed to non-CC stations in places like Albuquerque.

Similarly, there are cases where CC has licensed the use of another of its brands, The Beat, in places like San Antonio.

An early example of creating and licensing a national brand in radio is Mike Joseph's "Hot Hits" which was both a consulting product and a phrase stations could license and use locally without the consulting services.

An example of this is "Eyewitness News", which is actually a CBS (formerly Westinghouse) trademark from the days when KPIX in SF began using it in the 1960s. However, prior to registration, ABC O&O stations began using the mark as well. But today if anybody wants to use the "Eyewitness News" mark, they have to go to CBS to clear it first.

WABC TV ABC7 still uses 'Eyewitness News'

Ever see Jimmy Kimmel Live and his 'Lie Witness News'? Hilarious!

Jimmy Kimmel is a dick. He was obnoxious to a number of us at Maker Faire. Nobody liked him at all. As for WABC using the "Eyewitness News" trademark, yes they do. I never said they didn't, but if anybody else besides the prior users wants to use it, they'll have to go to CBS, the trademark owner.
