How did San Francisco end up with so many Hot-AC stations?

I could pick up at least 6 Hot AC stations from my location in San Francisco.

STAR 101.3, 101.7 KKIQ, Alice @ 97.3, MIX 106.5, 92.1 KKDV, & 95.3 KUIC. I
