San Jose FM Radio

Since San Jose rank #28 in the Arbitron market, there are only 12 Commerical FM radio station that serves the South Bay. Can we add more FM radio to San Jose area? Will it be possible to move 93.7 (Felton) & 101.7 (Livermore) into the San Jose/Silicon Valley? Also, is it possible to add boosters for KDON 102.5 (Salinas) and KWAV 96.9 (Monterrey), & KSTN 107.3 (Stockton) to the SJC area?

Huh? Market size refers to the population in the market, not the total of radio stations available.

Moving a station from one city to the other (such as KKIQ/101.7) has nothing to do with market size; it has everything to do with availability of space on the FM dial. KKIQ was shoe-horned into the Tri-Valley -- a predecessor station was once licensed to Hayward on that frequency -- so that KIOI (101.3) could increase its power. It won't be moving to San Jose.

Using boosters doesn't work, either, for the purposes of bringing a Stockton station into San Jose. That's not how it works.

San Jose is what is called an "embedded market" by Arbitron. Both San Jose and Santa Rosa are fully contained in the San Francisco MSA (Metro Survey Area) but, because the broadcasters who do not cover much beyond each of these sub-set areas have paid Arbitron, there is also a report for each of them.

When you see the San Francisco numbers, the report includes San Jose and Santa Rosa listening. In fact, a subscriber to the SF survey can break out by county any area they want... it's just that the SJ and SR stations want a full formal book beyond this.

I know, but what are the chances for 101.7 KKIQ moving into the San Jose area, 93.7 Felton moving into the San Jose area?

Also, since KDON, KWAV, & KSTN have city grade coverage in San Jose, why not add booster stations to improve their converage in the Silicon Valley?

Answer... low revenue. Most embedded markets are very low revenue. San Jose is market 35, but it is 65th in revenue. Who would want to move in there?

You already asked, and it was already answered: no chance whatsoever.

Sometimes it seems like KDON has a better San Jose signal than KYLD.

There are certain areas in the town of Sonoma that I have picked up KDON on my car stereo with a decent signal..I guess it has to do with the fact that strait south from the sonoma area there are no significant mountain ranges between Sonoma and salinas....It's wierd because KSFM in Woodland is much closer but the signal has a tough time going over the mountains that separate Sonoma from the Central Valley...

I'm have no technical knowledge, but I can tell you that on the southern side of Bernal Heights in San Francisco, I get San Jose FMs (even low power ones like KCNL) better than most of the San Francisco FMs. And there are plenty of mountains between southern SF and San Jose. I haven't tried KDON. What is their frequency - 102.??

The same is true of TV - with the cable out, I can only pick up KICU-36 in San Jose, and I also get KSBW-8 (Salinas Monterey) very clearly over the air without rabbit ears. KNTV also came in clearly in the past, though I haven't tried it without cable since they moved their transmitter.

^^^^KDON is 102.5 MHZ. If you look at the geography of the Bay Area Sonoma is well to the north east of SF. Directly South of Sonoma are the San Pablo Bay wetlands then open water (San Pablo and San Francisco Bays) all the way to San Jose. There are no natural abstructions in that distance of what I would say 80 miles...and I don't know of any significant mountain range between San Jose and Salinas...
