Sandy Beach To Retire. David Bellavia to mornings.

Maybe Beach should take a cue from Jay Lawrence who back in the 1970s was a music personality at WGR. Jay Lawrence also played music on WNEW in New York, KLAC and KFI in Los Angeles. Most recently he did a right wing talk program on KTAR in Phoenix. He left KTAR and got into Republican politics and is now a member of the Arizona House of Representatives. All the radio work undoubtedly helped him get elected. About a year ago Lawrence introduced a bill that would have made it a crime to wear a mask while participating in a protest demonstration. Lawrence says that crafting new laws is the best job he's ever had. Like Beach, he is in his eighties. Maybe there is a seat available in the New York Legislature where a Republican from the far right would have a chance.

I'm not familiar with Beach or the Buffalo market, but I live in metro Phoenix, and am all too familiar with the former "Luvable One" (Lawrence). He has been little more than a laughingstock for his entire career in the Arizona Legislature (he was first elected in 2014). Fortunately for him, he represents a wealthy district (far north Scottsdale, Carefree, and Fountain Hills) that is 44% Republican and 21% Democrat (most of the rest are independent). He will keep his job as long as he wants it, until he's term-limited out (in '22, but he could run for the State Senate), or as long as he's on this Earth, whichever comes first.

Would a person with similar far right wing beliefs be electable in the Buffalo area?

The upside for these 80-somethings in the legislature is they get great health insurance. Because if they're on their own, they might not.

Poor baby. He'd have to go on Medicare like the rest of us geezers. :D

IMO, Beach just wants to get the hell out of there. He's been sleepwalking through his shows, repeating himself to fill time and relying on his co-hosts and usual daily callers to carry the ball. You can tell by listening he is just watching the clock. Who can blame him? He knows broadcasting has gone to the dogs, had a long, successful career and just doesn't want to be part of it anymore.

Yet in the January to March period he had a 10.2 in 12+ and a 7.5 in 35-64. In a local market, very salable.

You are awfulizing the situation.

That was before the Pandemic. Entercom weighed his cost vs return. They chose to move on. If Beach was "salable" as you say, they would have kept him around a while longer...

Don't kid yourself. The guy thrives on adulation. He's old school. Wants to die with his boots on.

Hey, I'm wondering... If one could resurrect John Otto, would he have a place in today's talk-radio landscape in Buffalo? And, more specifically, as so-called 'replacement' for Sandy Beach?

They have to pay Bellavia. Beamer will work for nothing and they've been "training" him on-air for awhile.

It's official: Bellavia gets the slot:

I'm not surprised. When you look at other Entercom talk stations around the country, this is seen as an important local slot.

I predicted David would get the gig in the beginning of the thread. And also that Sandy's departure was a contract dispute.

I hope they keep Tony as the producer. But I bet Beamer isn't too happy about this development.

I've never heard Sandy as a talk show host only as a jock. He spent a few years here in Erie, PA from 1974-1977 at WJET 1400. Ruffeled some feathers frequently on-air then. Some things never change, lol. Wishing him the best despite how others feel about him. There aren't too many other 81 year old hosts on the air.

John Otto would've had to much smarts, class and/or integrity to go down the rabbit holes of lies and absurd conspiracy theories that today's talkradio hosts frequent.

Do you think Beamer is that removed from reality that he doesn't realize how grating he is?
