Sandy Hook Parents Lawsuit Against Alex Jones & GCN to Proceed

The ruling came out a couple weeks ago, but I just learned of it today. Media didn't cover the latest development as much. Should be an interesting lawsuit to watch unfold this year. Grab some popcorn!

-- Article: Minnesota companies named as defendants in defamation lawsuit filed by Sandy Hook families

Most cases settle before they reach trial, but I see this one going the distance. I think the Sandy Hook families are out to teach Jones & co. a lesson, in court.

Damages sought are in excess of $1 million, but the legal fees and costs have to be mounting since the case was filed in April 2018. The court has already enforced financial sanctions against Jones multiple times as the case has progressed.

Wondering if any of the involved will be shut down, sold, transferred, or dissolved as a result - or if it will be business as usual with little to no impact.

If these hearings go jury, Mr. Jones is in big trouble. And I don't think any will settle out of court. The cases are far more than monetary-settlement issues. These families have been put through unfathomable horror and pain from having a child killed while at school, then from Alex Jones monetizing their pain by peddling ridiculous conspiracy theories to build his followers. He should be ruined financially and publicly. That's the only way to permanently shut someone like him up.

This lawsuit may be over before it even starts. The Sandy Hook families are seeking a default judgment, eliminating the need for a trial.

On Tuesday, the plaintiffs lawyer argued Jones & co. must be sanctioned for violating rules on pretrial discovery, as well as previous court orders, by withholding vital information that was first requested in 2018.

"We still don't have the most basic information about this case," lawyer Mark Bankston told the judge, arguing that Jones has failed to:
- provide a wide range of requested evidence, including video of his on-air discussions about Sandy Hook relevant transcripts and the content of social media accounts
- directly answer many of the questions asked during a sworn deposition

The Sandy Hook families' lawyer argued that because the pattern of abuse was so egregious, the parents should be able to skip next year's trials on whether Jones defamed them and proceed directly to a determination of damages. He also asked the judge to find Jones in contempt of court for violating previous orders to provide the requested information.

In addressing why the defense's lawyer waited until one day before the hearing to file responses to the motions for default and contempt of court, he said, "There was no gamesmanship, your honor,"

"Hard to believe," the judge replied. "That's hard to believe."

The judge said she would issue rulings on the default judgment and contempt of court "as quickly as I can. I'll get this to you pretty quickly,"

The defendants have already been hit with more than $150,000 in court-ordered sanctions for failing to meet their discovery commitments.

The judge is clearly no fan of the defense... we shall see what happens.

My favorite quote from the defense: "a form of psychosis" made him question whether the event was staged when it occurred in 2012."
