The wind might be over 100 mph at the top of Empire, so there's a chance that all the FMs could go off the air except for 94.7.

Not that 4 Times Square would fare any better in that regard, but there are a dozen or so FM aux facilities there. None for CBS properties (CBS has their aux just a block or two down Broadway at CBS's headquarters)

4TS is considerably more hardened than Empire, especially when it comes to backup power.

Some of CBS Radio's FM auxes are at 1515 Broadway (the HQ not of CBS but of quasi-sister company Viacom); 102.7 has its aux on one of the WINS towers out in Jersey. The Emmis stations (and former Emmis stations) have their auxes on the same tower in West Orange as 94.7. I believe 96.3's aux is still out there as well.

All of which is to say - the NYC FM dial will not fall silent if Empire were to lose power or (far less likely) suffer damage to its antennas. The stations with aux sites on 4TS will continue on with almost no difference in their analog coverage (nobody has an HD backup at 4TS, AFAIK). The most noticeable FM sign that Empire is off, unless you have an HD radio, would be the absence of WBAI, which has no auxiliary site.

TV would be rather more affected. I know of several DTV signals with aux facilities at 4TS, but there are more that don't have any licensed auxes.

And Z100 is still cranking out Auto-Tuned CHR .....

That's Clear-Channel voicetracking for you. Simulcast local TV! 7, 4, 2, anyone!

I've been watching WCBS, and Mayor Bloomberg's message isn't good-a crane is dangling off of a non-completed high rise building, and the Atlantic City boardwalk is starting to wash away into the ocean!

NYC schools continue to close, public transportation will continue to be closed, and NYSE is still considering closing AGAIN tomorrow. Stay safe guys! Let us know about what AM and FMs are knocked off...

88.7 WRSU (the Rutgers U. station) is off the air.

88.9 WSIA is dead air.

91.1 WFMU is dead air.

93.5 WVIP is dead air.

98.7 WEPN-FM is simulcasting WABC-TV.

99.5 WBAI is transmitting in mono.

There is no need for every single station to cover the same news in a market so saturated with media as New York is. A common mistake is to think that listeners don't know where to go for emergency information in a market with major, well known and identifiable information outlets.

Imagine younger people who can't go out, who find every TV channel filled with storm coverage, and who need some entertainment to pass the time.

I've seen time after time in markets with frequent hurricanes that music stations that try to cover storms simply lose all their listeners, while the stations that are known for coverage surge in the ratings.

I even made the mistake of trying to become an "instant storm coverage station" where, despite staffing up and giving terrific coverage, the known news outlets blew us away and it took us months to recover our music audience.

And Z-100 is not so significantly voice tracked that it can not insert information. What you imply is that running Seacrest is somehow abandoning "localism." Of course, a local TV affiliate is not abandoning its market by running "American Idol" but is, simply, providing the most attractive programming.

WCBS-TV is starting to dim in and out, there are brief power cuts as what the anchors said.

Lower Manhattan is starting to flood past Battery Park, and an on-purpose power outage has started because Con Ed wants to protect the lines. When saltwater hits the system, it could be much longer (days) to get the lights back on.

The crane on W 57th is still swaying significantly, and if it falls it could cause a massive explosion. Con Ed is trying to get the crane stable.

Sandy has also killed one person somewhere in the Tri-State area, where a tree fell on the person's house. :'(

More updates to follow...

The CBS Radio studios on Hudson St. as well as the Broadcast Center on 52nd street are both on generator power according to the CBS twitter.

There are at least 2 tree-related deaths here in CT, one was a firefighter in his fire apparatus.

CBS FM 101.1 simulcasted 880 during Irene, and also aired the Giants game the day after. Fresh 102.7 simulcasted WINS. 92.3 Now simulcasted WCBS-TV.

The wind might be over 100 mph at the top of Empire, so there's a chance that all the FMs could go off the air except for 94.7.

101.9 should simulcast its sister station IQ 106.9. Clear Channel stations should simulcast TV stations, and air its customized New York news format on one station.

Wouldn't CC have to Simulcast Fox5 news since Fox News radio is partly managed by CC.

Again... who cares what Clear Channel does? There are literally dozens of OTA sources for fantastic live and local news and information without CC involved. There are even more if you have a smartphone or internet.

CC's irrelevant when it comes to community broadcasting. They're just a big entertainment company, which is fine. There are still plenty of locally-oriented stations out there providing the necessary info, and they'll get the appreciation they deserve.

WPLJ is also still cranking out the "hits" listening via iHeart Radio

[Cant' seem to tune into Z100, WLTW, or KTU on iHeart anymore] - Get a stream not avail message.

Are there any other FMs and AMs off the air or dead air right now? I know a few of the college stations and WVIP 93.5 are dead air...

Looks like WXRK may start simulcasting WFAN, currently is airing a Monday Night Football game on their stream. Water issues at the AM transmitter.

Can't check now, but I guess 660 is either cutting in and out or it's in dead air mode...

One of the WCBS reporters (the one in Queens) almost got KNOCKED into the water when a big fast wave almost knocked him in earlier today. That's what you DON'T do in a hurricane...
