I believe the beloved HD-1X has C-Quam AM stereo, so you should be able to tune in KCJJ 1630 at night and hear some damn nice stereo AM, or if you live by Lake Erie, CFCO 630 is in analog stereo AM, or upstate NY has an outstanding LIVE LOCAL AM CQUAM stereo station WIRY, and in South Myrtle Beach there is also a smoking nice sounding AM stereo station on 900KHz as well as stereo spots on WLS at night.
Are you saying that it takes a very strong analog signal to get CQuam stereo out of it? That was one advantage in the early 80s with CQuam AM stereo was if you could receive the analog signal, 90% of the time you could trigger the stereo decoding unlike HD radio (and of course short of thunderstorms in either case.) Actually you shouldn't have to 'force mono' to get stereo, as the CQUAM 25Hz pilot tone should trigger the stereo and you wouldn't be decoding HD anyhow.
Or have I made a wrong assumption and you're talking FM band not AM band?
