Sangean PR-D5

Does anyone on here have this?

http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/spcialty/0068.html

My friend from out of town brought his and we were messing around with it. Standing outside in suburban Cincinnati during the daytime, we were able to pick up and clearly hear WSCR, WBBM, and WLS. This was around noon. I am seriously considering buying one of these radios because I was so impressed. With my radios, I can pick up WBBM and WLS, but I can't really make out what they were saying. These stations came in clear as day!

By now you probably already own one, which would not be a bad thing. One can never have enough radios.

I live in Cincinnati. I too can hear WSCR, WLS, WBBM and WGN during the day on my unmodified DT-400W when I am outside and away from all the noise; so I'm not so sure that is a reason to buy one.

You might consider buying a Sangean DT-400W and then modifying it by adding an external ferrite bar and a slider. I just added the ferrite/slider setup to my Eton E-100 it is incredible the improvement it made. It was also a very easy modification. Complete info is available at www.DXer.ca.

That said, I'm thinking about buying one of the PR-D5 just for the fact it is stereo! Amazon has them for $79.84 with free shipping.

Thanks for the heads up.

Has anyone compared this to the grundig E5 or the C Crane plus? I'd be most interested in the AM selectivity & receiver VS the others. Thanks!

I imagine that the Sangean and the CCRadio perform about the same on AM, as they have the same antenna. Sangean makes the double-coil twin-ferrite plutonium whatever antenna that they both use. As for the E5, I have the similar G6 and I decided to test it out this afternoon. Standing outside with it, I couldn't make out any of the Chicago stations except a little of WLS. Just for kicks and giggles, I brought out my passive indoor loop AM antenna, put it next to the G6, and through the wonders of inductive coupling, I could get WSCR, WBBM and WLS. WGN is out of the question around here because I live so close to the WLW transmitter. Anyways, the Sangean blew away the G6, and I bet it's a similar story with the E5.

Even at night?

I didn't get a chance to test out the Sangean at night, and the friend who has it lives in Indianapolis. I think I'll email him about its nighttime performance. Either that or I'll buy one, but I'll have to sell one of my other radios to make room. So, out of curiosity, does anyone here want a Grundig S350DL? It's black and in very good shape. Email me at: [email protected]. Thanks!

I am the guy who purchased the Sangean PR-D5 that Almanac27 speaks of. ;D

I haven't had the chance to put the nighttime DXing to the test, but casual nighttime DX reception in my neck of the woods (Indianapolis), I have received KDKA, WSB, WSM, WLW, and I can't recall the station in Toronto (?) that plays an odd mix of standards and 50's pop music. IMHO, the AM sound quality is above average for a radio of its size. The FM performance isn't nothing to sneeze at either and the RDS on this small portable radio is a plus. If you have an iPod or MP3 player, the aux in feature turns the PR-R5 into a nice set of amplified stereo speakers. It is a lot of radio for the money.

Have you had a chance to compare the AM receiver to other radios, say the Grundig G5?
I'm an avid nighttime Dxer and would like to know how the Sangean compares to the C Crane or G5.
If you get the chance to experiment further with it, your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The Toronto station plays the adult standards and the soft AC songs, from perhaps the 1940s to the perhaps up to 80s soft AC (I'm not quite sure) music. AM 740 is heard well at night here in Va.

Haven't listent to them in such a long time. They were CBL a CBC affiliate last time I tuned in.

I just got a Sangean PR-D5 and it's AMAZING!!!!

It was delivered this morning.

I had wanted to get one for a while ever since I first read this thread but I was just afraid to spend the money back then. Now that the nights are getting longer, I decided I have to have one of these.

It's a little before 12 noon and here in Tampa about 20 to 25 miles inland from the Gulf, I can get a real good signal from WWL! Before, I could only hear it very faintly with mostly splash over from WGUL. I can also get WLNO 1060 from New Orleans just good enough to be able to make it out.

I can now also get a little bit of 560 WQAM and a good signal from 710 WQAI in Miami too. Another pretty good signal is WYMM 1530 from Jacksonville.

I'm a little rushed for time to do a detailed scan right now but all I can say is there are stations coming in on every frequency and often many even on the lower frequencies!

Soon, I hope to do a couple of video band scans.

I don't know how I managed without this thing!

I'll be interested in your opinion as I'm always looking for a better AM receiver.

I noticed something interesting last night above 1600 KHZ.

Before, I was only able to hear one station on the frequencies that had a signal (with the exception of 1700).

Now, I can not only hear those stations better but another distant station in the background too.
