Santa Didn't Like KOOL

Exactly right, and even Nurse Jeff and I thought the evolution would be sooner than later. Having both news/talk stations on the AM band helped each other. But when KTAR went to 92~Three, that same band sampling of the two stations went away. We can still remember how giddy Pat McMahon was telling listeners they could hear their favorite station in stereo. That wasn't the benefit, as the story became you could hear KTAR on a band where most people listen...especially those under the age of 55.

Wasn't the whole point of KTAR going to 92.3 so that sports could say on 620 AM and news/talk (when they still took listener calls) moved to 92.3? Then the whole "live and local" thing was a bust - what with so many hours of Beans and Rice of their broadcast day - and then sports followed to FM. I can't remember any talkers, not even Ankarlo (those were the days), using "stereo" as a selling point. For anyone born after 1990, 1991....the natural response would be, "Yeah, and...?" What *isn't* in stereo?

The best FM talk in this market can't be claimed by 92.3 - not when they've all but branded themselves Beans and Rice's Phoenix Flagship - but, rather, the "failed" KZON when they flipped to talk. If you can imagine Bruce & Pamela having the incentive to take on-air listener calls instead of talking to themselves (how is that in any way entertaining or informative?)...that's what the pre-KTAR FM talk sounded like - and it wasn't bad at all.

Days like today, during NPR's pledge week, I am really tempted to donate to 91.5 despite the atrocious schmaltz-jazz they play (really? when will KJZZ play cooler, hipper music?) because I honestly listen to more and more 91.5 because 92.3 is downright unlistenable most days - except for Detour Dan.

What's wrong with having both? That's what choice is all about. Radio is designed for button pushing, not listening non-stop. Both stations have their style, their advantages, and disadvantages. So just listen to both. Easy.
