Santa doesn't visit Nassau but Scrooge does

Some nasty rumors have been floating and seem to be verified that Nassau will be trimming their Upper Valley and Barre/Newport staffs just in time for Christmas. Something about saving money because they lost so much in those markets this year. No surprise there. The company seems to have very few bright spots in New England according to the people (who are left) who work there.

Is it all programing or is it some sales? It seems that the N stations in the manch/concord/lakes have a 10 to 1 ratio, 10 salespeople to every 1 on air/programing person.

Aren't they all running bare-bones operations as it is? I suppose with WEEI replacing the programming on several sticks, this isn't shocking news.

I bet Well-done keeps his job!

Typical of Nassau... This is the same thing they did last year and it impacted all departments from programming to engineering to management in all the markets they own (NJ,PA,MD and New England). Guess Lou and Tris need to figure out how to keep their Christmas bonuses intact :)

In Barre, they are advertising for a sales job. They are looking to add a sixth person to the sales team. I don't know who else they can cut with most people doing stuff for multiple stations.

This is all really sad if it is true.

I think the reason that there are sales folks is that most of their pay comes from commissions on what they sell unlike "talent" ...
I interviewed for a sales job there back in March and it seemed to go pretty well. At the end of the interview, both the sales manager and I agreed that the job probably wasn't for me. He said, You've been taking notes during our entire interview. You really are a reporter and writer, not a sales person. He was right.

He's the programming guy for Nassau in Lebanon. I'm hearing the same thing that changes are afoot and mostly in programming and office positions. Not going to be a good Christmas for some Nassau employees. Again. I'm sure Lou will feel badly for them on Xmas day as he sits in one of his palatial homes eating caviar and drinking champagne.

At the end of the day, it is still Lou M. being totally accountable for the financial health and viability of his company. In saying that, no one likes to see jobs getting cut and positions eliminated. A tough and crappy fact of life, just seems to stick out more so in the radio biz these days..

This time of year, these boards are full of this no matter where you look. Whether it's Clear Channel in Orlando, Peak Broadcasting, CBS, Entercom in Buffalo; it's everywhere. It simply is what it is.
Heck, in Portland, Saga has their two top stations (from a revenue perspective) with the same mid day person under two different names; separated by a morning show host who does half of the mid day postion. Everyone in this industry is now doing two or three different positions; and if you don't have the skill sets to do two or three different jobs, no matter what company you work for, you're simply not in the radio industry.

Spot on adbuyer. The thing is, Saga doesn't have a yearly blood bath between October and December. It would appear that they just run the operation lean and mean. (Makes sense. They're in business to make money) And from what I've heard, they take good care of their people.

It still doesn't make sense to cut people and add more work to the already overworked people even if it is a budget reason. You know that everyone else won't get anything more for the extra work. Also, I wish it wasn't happening so close to the holidays.

And a good evening to you all!

I'll be hitting the paper bag hard tonight, nothing's worse than cold winds and snow on the sidewalk! Thankfully the banking folks in Portland have myriad options when it comes to ATMs. I'll be in the BOA at One City Center, Herb won'tcha spare me a dime?

Back on topic, I don't know about other markets but I did notice this weekend that former WYNZ (remember Oldies 100.9?) night queen Brenda Oullette was not on the air nor on the website of the almighty Frank, where she's spent some time lately. Looks like Nassau's jewel-in-crown station isn't exempt from the guillotine of the beancounters! In the meantime, we can enjoy many "Hi, I'm Mike Roberts" weekends!

I do hope the suits do right by the Bonedriver with the upcoming demise of the Big Bad Bone. Solid jock and I hear is a good fellow too.

Best of luck to all and drive safely tomorrow!

Cheers,
OldPort Wino

I haven't heard any talk about Oldies 104.3 going BUH-BYE, but that's what those in the know say is a 100% well-done deal. A shame that mini Clear Channel wouldn't even try to find a home for two of the best guys in the area, Shep and Kenn. Nassau is now all management (so called) and no...uh...what-do-you-call...er...broadcasters, yeah...those guys. And anyone who says "it is what it is" needs a fist jammed, I mean, needs to carefully reconsider his thought process. Wouldn't want to upset our friendly and highly intelligent moderator. ;D

Just got word that Nassau/NH has axed Roger Parmalee (WNHW-93.1) who has worked in Concord radio since God wore short pants. Good luck to Roger, we'll listen for you at WEVO.

To quote Imus, that can't suck enough. Roger's a great guy. Typical...slash the good guys and keep the brown-nosing incompetent toadies.

Does this mean Frank will be a "trimulcast" on 106.3, 104.9 and 99.1?
If I owned it, I'd take the 106.9 in Moultonboro and flip it to classic rock when the Hawk stations start carrying WEEI.
