Santa Fe via R&R: Employees Purchase KBAC from EMF

Radio and Records is reporting today that a group of investors - including three staff members - have successfully negotiated the purchase of KBAC from EMF....once EMF closes on the purchase of the station from Clear Channel.

EMF will retain KSFQ.

Re: Employees Purchase KBAC from EMF - THAT'S FREEDOM, FOLKS!!!

:D I'M VERY, VERY PLEASED THAT THE PROGRESSIVE MUSIC FORMAT WILL STAY ON THE AIR IN SANTA FE. FRIENDS SUCH AS KBAC-FM ARE SO HARD TO FIND - SO PROMISING... I MIGHT HAVE TO MAKE A VISIT OVER THERE LATER THIS YEAR. I LOVE THE COMMUNITY-OWNERS CONCEPT, MAYBE FM RADIO WILL GET BACK TO SERVING THE AUDIENCE INSTEAD OF WALL STREET. PEACE - JOE G

Air1 is one of my favorite radio formats as I pretty much only listen to chrisitian chr on the radio but their are very few ones out there. I prefer it over christian AC K-Love so I am not happy it will not be on if I ever drove down interstate 40 in New Mexico as my dad lives in Arizona. I would not listen to the current secular format as I do not listen to secular formats. But I am not surprised EMF would not need it for air1 because EMF only puts Air1 in big cities. Air1 is already in Albuquerque and getting KBAC would have expanded air1 to Santa FE but that is not as big of a market they but it in. They may fear it getting enough support. Emf just wanted to get K-Love into the Sana Fe market. I do not like that but that is how it is. So it probably works out for EMF too getting GEtting on 101.1 and then getting money back for 98.1. I guess the main studio wavier EMF filed for 98.1 was if it was not sold.

And not to rain on anyone's parade - but the New Mexican reported that Clear Channel had lost money on KBAC for two years now. The question comes to mind is how KBAC will make money now, especially with the same management. Just wonderin'...

The theory it seems the KBAC people are pushing is that Clear Channel overpaid for the property, which it did, and didn't know what it was doing since they moved the format to 104.1. They say KBAC did far better before it was moved to 104.1, when it still had most of the same staff, and seem to believe it could do that well again without Clear Channel's interference. I'm not sure any of that means they'll be successful, especially if they overspend on getting the station heard in Albuquerque again, but it seems at least based on some degree of fact.

A lot of this will depend what the management's group is paying EMF for the frequency; and whether they've got a bank note to pay every month or have the luxury of passionate investors with deep pockets not looking for any immediate return.

Absolutely! If they overpaid for KBAC, they're going to be in a world of hurt, at least early on. I also wonder if they've taken into account that Clear Channel has damaged the brand over the last three or four years. I suspect they could turn that around, but it's likely to take a lot of work.

It's also interesting to note that, over the history of the station, KBAC has lost money far more years than it turned a profit. I remember talking to someone on the old FIDONet about the station a year or two after it dumped "The Wave" for the format it has now. I was told it was "an engineer's toy and a deejay's nightmare!" At the time, it had been on-air about five years and never made a dime. Of course, if an Aspen, CO construction permit can fetch $900,000 without having even started construction, you've got to feel a little better about their chances!
