Santa has arrived!

Just today, B-95 has gone wall to wall Christmas!! This is a first

Yep, I heard that when I was airchecking the national EAS test... now, the question is, who will win all-Xmas in Albany? WTRY or WYJB? WYJB could perhaps beat WGNA with the Christmas flip :)

Are we done with Christmas flips? What about WPTR flipping to Christmas CCM on Friday? Or Star 101.3 jumping in and flipping to all-Xmas?

jingle bells jingle bell rock who's a flipping and what happens when there done flipping will they stay the same format?

whats on santa's wish list for radio in albany starting next year ...hmmmm

WTRY will probably go almost all automated/syndicated with only Jamie live in mornings, and WYJB might tweak towards Hot AC (noticed they were changing some jingles around and not mentioning "soft rock" in the weeks before the flip to Christmas)

WPTR is going Christian AC and might use Christmas music before the flip... (some Christian ACs go Christmas... like 104.7 the Fish in Atlanta)

104.9 should spin the format wheel again and try oldies? Cat's going nowhere it seems...

you know danikayser84 I would love to see another oldies station "True Oldies" like they have in nyc, i would imagine someone will try going oldies but not sure since WPTR called it quits and only online now.

I would love to see crush fm oldies but terry will keep it 90's hits, unless he changes he mind

your right 104.9 the cat is dead as a country station WGNA Is blowing them out of the water. they could turn oldies

I am wondering who will be fly 92 next program director , marissa has been losing her voice from time to time.

I think they might find someone from the outside to be honest , unless chuck makes suzy garcia the next program director we shall see...

personally I think there will be lots of changes at albany broadcasting starting next year B95.5 very well might turn HOT AC since we have too many rock stations.

104.9 the cat might flip too

time will tell .... merry christmas

No I would rather see 95.5 or 105.7 go oldies. Way better signals on both channels and in order to compete and blow wtry out of the water once and for all you need a solid signal not a repeat like 96.7 . Also the only station in nyc playing oldies now is CBSFM. Where do they have a true oldies channel?

IIRC, WPLJ's HD2 has/had True Oldies on it but not many people have HD radios... WTRY is a directional class A (to protect WSUL and WHAI), while WVKZ/True Oldies is a graveyard AM signal that only goes out like 10 miles I think...

Don't see an oldies flip on 95.5 or 105.7 in the cards any time soon...

First - DaniKayser - I have seen you post on here numerous times - and in all honesty - don't believe you know what you are talking about. On SO many topics - and I finally had to comment.
WGNA flip to Christmas? A HERITAGE, pretty much exclusive format with continued solid ratings? Really?
The flip for B95 was easier - their format traditionally flips nationwide and does fairly well with it - and with no true signal for Magic - this was a logical step - I guess. I still question the flip of a 50k watt station - but that's not my call.

I didn't mean WGNA flip to Christmas... I meant WYJB beating them ratingswise for the Fall 2011 Arbitron book :)

True signal ???

So perhaps this is telling us that WROW will NOT go Xmas this year? If memory serves, they DID last year. I try to listen to ABC stations as little as possible, so I'm not even recalling if WYJB went all-Xmas last year (closer to 12/25) at all. It seems logical that competition was needed (on FM) to go against the traditional WTRY flip. Remember last year we had an early flip on 105.7 before they played wheel of formats in 2011. That's what makes me think b95 stayed the coarse.

One thing is for sure, 1160 will surely go Xmas, at least for the dayparts when they're on the Dial Global bird.

Ok, so WTRY is all Christmas and Crawford is dropping the oldies format from 96.7. That would leave only one oldies station (Magic 590)now through at least 12/26. Magic should take advantage of this and play those core oldies. Drop the Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Perry Como. Replace it with The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson....etc. Then promote it. If there is no budget to promote it, then do some freebies (remotes, station vehicle presence, jocks shave their heads for a Christmas charity, Jay and Ben bungee jump off the twin bridges...you get the idea). They have a great execution of the format going right now, but I think they spoil it with the standards.

Just my 3 cents. Oh and happy holidays to all

Scrooge ;D

Great idea Tom. Magic 590 does rock and roll on weekends. If they do 24/7 oldies they should change their slogan. "Magic 590" does sound more like a name for a touchee-feelee Standards station than a oldies moniker.

I wish 590 had better weekday music hosts. Too much Ben Patten.

And I finally figured out what bugs me about Bob Greene. Since he unretired he tries too hard, talks too fast and tries to put too many words in each minute. He sounds bombastic like a radio "Ted Baxter".

I know their signal is weaker than weak, but the Capital District does have a True Oldies station -- WVKZ in Schenectady. And having at least that is better than the situation in most markets (like mine).

I used to live in Schenectady but I'm now in a larger city in the Midwest; we have only one "oldies" station, and it just flipped to Christmas, so I'll be switching to other cities' oldies stations on my TuneIn Radio app. (WVKZ doesn't stream, though, so it won't be them...).

@Tom...Perhaps as a consultant you might advise a station like WROW to go a different course if things are heading downward, but in 590's case, it seems that their present mix has been serving them well. To coin the popular phrase... "why fix it if it ain't broke"? At least 590 is there for the starving for standards crowd. Then for those craving oldies, they've got the time and the place already carved out...along with several minues each & every hour.

As much as their announcers and formatics bug the hell out of me, they seem to have a winning combination... even though you think its spoiled by standards.
