Santa On The Radio

Remember when stations would have someone "do" a Santa Show On Air every Christmas?

Reminded of that this morning listening to WNTK and they had someone on the phone, talking about Breakfast With Santa in the Upper Valley.

WOKO in Burlington has had a live Santa show taking kids' calls on the last two Saturday mornings before Christmas, for the last 20 years. The calls can be hilarious, but they also can be very sad and poignant.

Some radio folks still get It.

I can't say I've heard many stations with a live Santa on air. WROR in Boston had a lame Santa call-in a week or so ago, don't how regular it is. The guy sounded like an elf...not a Jolly Ol' Elf either.

Last year, during the big ice storm and power outtage in the Fitchburg area, WEIM 1280 (now WPKZ) put on a Santa show with calls from kids. Ben Parker hosted and news guy Scott May played St. Nick. Many of the kids had just one wish: that the lights and heat would come back on. A very poignant and well-done local broadcast.

Only slightly off-topic...one year (probably '87 or '88) WDEA in Ellsworth ran Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol'. Can't remember who voiced it but it was pretty neat.

i recall the days when we had Gary Dixon as Santa on WGAN and on WIDE. it was wildly popular. kids would call in, Santa would take the calls - and sponsors would be lined up to have "an hour."

the Christmas Carol might have been the original radio version with Allistaire Cooke as provided by ABC Radio. it came as a "bonus" to all ABC affilliates each year.

WDEA was a CBS affiliate. If the Cooke version was the one we aired, we must've worked out some kind of arrangement.
