Santa Rosa Radio

I noticed on tvradioworld.com, a lot of Santa Rosa FM stations are beyond the city-grade coverage. Do people in Santa Rosa have a hard time listening to radio? Also, does San Francisco FM stations reach Santa Rosa very well or very poor?

Santa Rosa is a very healthy radio market. You are not clear when you say "beyond the city-grade coverage" so explain.

Once you pass Petaluma on north bound 101 SF FM signals become shadowed.

AM signals depend on power and directional pattern.

Regardless Santa Rosa stands on its own as a heathly radio market and the employee compensation has improved in the past couple of years. Also you get more for your dollar in rentals from Petaluma and north.

How about some comments on current formats and station operations in Santa Rosa?

If you looked at KSXY 98.7, KXTS 100.9, KJOR 104.1,& KSRT 107.1, they either barely pass as a city grade for Santa Rosa, or miss.

But you don't need a city-grade signal to serve a market.

Take Sacramento......92.1 from Placerville does not even have a 60 dbu contour over Sac, except if you use a longley-Rice method it does. Same for 94.3 out of Jackson which is now the Salem-Fish station. They have excellent real-world coverage in Sacramento.

So the FCC maps in many cases are not the real story at all.

Anyone have other examples?

94.3 out of Jackson has not been a Salem Fish Station since 2005. It is now a Bustos owned Spanish Station!

2 things to remember about signals in/around santa rosa - a lot of them are on mountain tops AND class A signals. they might not look like much on paper, but they do what they can and need to.

KSXY for example - 165 watts i think and you can hear them on the road down to novato and up in clearlake. you don't have any trouble hearing them in santa rosa proper, although there are some areas where building penetration might be a little sketchy. *note that this station has an app to change COL and increase power too.

i also noticed that there is a NEW signal coming at 106.3 in the not too distant future - currently has a CP for jenner, and an app to move to cazadero (if it hasn't already been done.) KGRP are the calls...don't know what the format is going to be...yet.

my $0.02 for today.

KGRP...hmmmmmmmm - wasn't there a station some time ago calling itself, "The Grape"?
Seems like it was a Santa Rosa or Notrh Bay station...those calls are
VERY familiar...
Cazadero - whatta bustling Metropolis that town is <smurk!>. Seems like the main core of business there is still up for sale, as I noticed on the national news last year...

i think the old KGRP is now 96.7 BOB-FM.

buuuuuuuut...don't quote me on that.

;)

Santa Rosa had some pretty decent radio talent 9-10 years ago. The Amaturo cluster (Magic, KSRO, Fox and Froggy) was strong. The Fox had Matthew in The Morning. He was #1 all demos but women and actually did damage to Brent Ferris. Ditto Froggy when they had Rick Jackson, Bob Gowa and Frank Terry. They actually beat the heritage country station, Q something. Amaturo spent money on marketing and exciting contests, like in the old days of radio. John Mack Flanangan did mornings on the oldies station. Stations got sold and I think new owners booted the big talents/salaries.
