Anyone here have any stories about SAS 106 1/2? I remember hearing it in my travels through KC. Where was the tower?

I assume the studio was in Liberty, with the AM, since the old "Main Studio" rules were in full effect back then. SAS seemed like a fun station, so any old stories are appreciated 👍

Looks like mid-1982, when Golden East out of Virginia took over from Southwest Radio Enterprises, headed by one Dean Goodman. (Now there's someone who mastered the art of failing upward.) Before late 1979 it was KFIX-FM.

It could be an interesting station, but hampered by the tower being located in Liberty and having to face off against KYYS which was truly in its prime in those days. In one rating period in 1982, the oldies station in the combo, daytimer KLDY(AM), actually beat it in 12+. Even so, once Golden East took over, and brought in Bobby Hattrik from St. Louis as a consultant, the station had a few successful years as KKCI with a format that was essentially a clone of St. Louis's KWK-FM. The KKCI GM was John Beck, who went from there to run KSHE in St. Louis for a very long and successful run.

Into the late 1990s, there was a stop sign at 57th & Main near Brookside where someone had plastered a "SAS 106 1/2 FM" sticker.

There was a "Mark Roberts" who worked at KSAS. Possibly an air name but, in any event, that was not me; I was in Columbia at the time.
 
Never got to hear it or its immediate successor, KKCI. I spent almost a month in Kansas City in the summer of ‘87 when my parents sent me to a summer camp in the metro. I listened to K-Lite 106.5 quite often during my stay. That and KCPW “Power 95” were my favorites. I picked up a stack of Power 95 bumper stickers from a record store at Independence Center. I wish I hadn’t wasted them by plastering them up around the camp.

I listened to All Hit X106 occasionally on visits to KC during my high school years. It was a pretty good station, and it led to the rise of Brian Burns as a programmer and consultant.

Three from 1980, all in mono (sorry). The July 4 files are brief, and were recorded in Trenton. The May 11 file is longer, and was recorded in Columbia during a night of really strong tropo. I called in to make a Ten Years After request; the jock actually played a different tune from the one I requested but claimed that was the request. I suppose games were played with requests all the time.
