Satellite VS Traditional Radio

I have not seen many topics on this and wanted to share my thoughts. I recently purchased a new car and with that I received a 3 month trail of Satellite Radio. I was not a fan of purchasing radio to start with but after listening to the Satellite stations for a month I switched back to the radio and I could not believe the difference. I am amazed at the amount of Ads that disrupted my music listening. I know that the ads bring in dollars to the station and allow for the programing but I decided for the small monthly fee that it was worth getting more music and a bigger variety with the satellite service. I am so glad with the Political ads that will be coming that I have alternative means of getting entertainment.

If you're willing to pay for more variety--I am, maybe 43 cents a day--it can be good. In the wee hours of the morning as I drive home from work I can listen to classic country, the sound of FoxNews/CNN/other news
channels; 60s, 70s, 80s rock with no ads (the news channels do have ads though of course)

I have a friend who bought it just for the old time radio.
Then there are baseball games from all over and other sports. Ads pop up there too, but at least you get the
games.

Jim7208 - before you go to the dark side ::) give the left end of the dial a chance. There's several music and talk stations are better-run than most of their commercial counterparts and, bonus, virtually no ads! Yeah, okay, there's "underwriting" but it's far less in-your-face and typically there's only 3-5 minutes per hour, instead of 18-22 minutes per hour.

I'd start with WERS 88.9 and WUMB 91.9FM. Then if you're feeling adventurous, go to WZBC 90.3, WMBR 88.1, WUML 91.5 (north shore) and WUMD 89.3FM (south shore). Beyond that, there's also a dozen or so smaller stations that cover limited areas that also fall under the "adventurous" category.

Mind you, I don't disparage satradio here. I personally don't feel there's enough value in it because I'm an NPR News/talk junkie so I always just tune in my local affiliate. But satradio definitely has its pluses.

I would agree about checking out non-comm radio (add my WMWM to it too) as well, though often they are
shows at certain times not channels devoted totally to it.
WUML I would call Merrimack Valley; WMWM is North Shore.

Some of my faves include
WMWM--Uncle Jack's Roadhouse (classic & contemp country) 1st Sat of month, Sat-9-mid (also other
oldies block shows in that slot)
Streamcast (or reg. radio if you happen to be up there) of My Place, Sat 8-9pm Vermont Public Radio
http://www.vpr.net/program_about/68/

WMWM Juke Joint--blues Sun 12-3 pm (we also have jazz, local music, Australian pop, chill music,
doo wop, etc. at various times)

I talked XM down to $6 a month....the sound quality is ok, but the variety is fantastic...I originally got XM for the baseball package but I enjoy what I have heard so far

I have 3 of them and I love XM !!!

Sixties on Six and 70's on Seven are my favorites, I loved what George Taylor Morris did with his stations up until his death, he did a fantastic job programming them!

Uncensored comedy on a friday afternoon makes the commute home bearable, Thank you XM Comedy channels!

70's on Seven

Sorry to hi-jack this thread, but since you mentioned "70s on Seven" I have to mention my surprise when I stopped in at Royal Buffet a Chinese-American Buffet Restaurant in Waterbury, Connecticut for lunch last week that they had "70s on Seven" playing over the speakers in the restaurant. The other Chinese-American buffets I frequent usually have Chinese Music playing.

I've heard restaurants playing XM or Sirius. A BBQ place in CT, Little Mark's Big Barbecue, had some country
from Sirius while some XM rock stations have been played at Pickled Onion in Beverly. Also heard some XM
on loudspeakers at a Hess station

The hardware store near me has satellite radio on in the store

I had to go to Plymouth NH yesterday, with the director of the town's Senior Center, who is a big Elvis fan. I got to listen to 4 hours of Elvis Radio XM 18.

You never have to worry about not being able to receive your favorite station with Siruis/XM

Though at times you'll experience NO SIGNAL, like in hilly areas, in tunnels (though I got fairly far into
the central artery tunnel before losing it), etc. Mostly good though

Urban music on satellite radio is just as good as Hot 87.7 and Touch-FM but there is nothing local on satellite. PIRATE RADIO STILL RULES !!!!

Most of what you receive has nothing to do with satellite reception. They cheat with a terrestrial microwave transmitter.

ive alwas wondered why WMBR says "the leftmost station on your dial" or something

on my Schaub Lorenz, its on the right side, on my Panasonic, the top. and its not the -most anything because of hot87

that said, i donatede $18.08 a couple years ago and i doubt ive listened to 1808 minutes of programmng

in case they mean political, amy goodman and noam and whatever that sunday morning crap is on 90.3

i guess they mean left in the lurch, which is what will happen at 2 am or so

i guess ipods are too fancy.. shuffle, computers deciding playlists .. turn on your SIRIUSXM at night folks

I've been a Sirius subscriber since 2003 and I've never looked back! Haven't listened to an FM music station since then! Too many commercials and limited playlists. Sirius/XM may not be perfect, but it's far better than anything offered on terrestrial FM stations. :)

I love Satellite radio as a concept.

It could be the place that reinvigorates radio as a whole. I'd love the opportunity to do a show where I could actually program the music I play. Imagine that? Personalities actually presenting music with passion...making a real connection with the audience? So much music has been overlooked/ignored.

If we empowered the qualified personality with the ability to do their jobs...imagine.

That's what made me love radio in the first place. And it's what makes it special. Immediacy...credibility...relatability.

Satellite could do that. It has the space and latitude to change the game. Unfortunately, more often than not, it mirrors terrestrial. Repetitive, stagnant, predictable. And that's why it will never be a legitimate competitor. It's a niche product.

It could be so much more.

It could be worse... they could have been piping in AM 990 out of Southington, CT. ;D

I have had Sirius for a couple years now. I LOVE IT! I, too, love the 60s and 70s, but find myself listening to the old radio shows mostly. I think Sirius and XM missed out in the beginning by not offering a free reciever with your initail sign up for a year. I am sure some people don't have it because of the cost of the hardware. Just my thought...
