Saturday Night Fever at 30

I noticed another thread on the site about Star Wars turning 30. How about Saturday Night Fever? 2007 marks 30 years since the advent of this phenomenon. (Hard to believe for those of us over 40!)...

Some could argue that this really solidifed the disco scene, atleast into mainstream status, and when you look at the songs on the soundtrack of that album it really is amazing. Most garnered significant airplay. More importantly, of the disco songs played today by many oldies and mainsteam AC's, this album seems to be "ground zero". And most of these songs still sound great today.

An historical event to be sure.

You have the right year, but you may be jumping the gun a little. Didn't the movie premier in December?

It did debut in December 1977. Most of the sales were in 1978, and not sure when Grease debuted in 1978. I was only 4 when Saturday Night Fever debuted, and too young to have watched it. I at least got the chance many years later on DVD.

You guys are indeed correct, Saturday Night Fever was released late in '77, but let the anniversary begin!

BTW, a lot of songs from the soundtrack were released and became hits before the soundtrack was released. The BeeGees "Jive Talkin" pre-dated the soundtrack by over two years, "You Should Be Dancing" by over one year, and "How Deep Is Your Love" first hit the Top40 in October '77. And who could forget the infamous "Fifth of Beethovan" by Walter Murphy in the summer of '76. Most of the other songs hit in '78. The movie was filmed in '77, and released in December '77 to coincide with the sountrack release.
