Saturday Night Live (12/5/09) Review and Discussion

No more live blogging allowed so we'll try a review and discussion type of thing. It won't be as fun but we'll see if it works and if it's worth it.

Actress Blake Lively hosted and Rihanna was the musical guest.

Every episode but one has opened with Armisen as Barack Obama. The one that didn't had Jason as VP Joe Biden

This week was no exception. It dealt with the reality couple party crashers who crashed Obama's state dinner. This one had Obama speaking in Pennsylvania and the couple (Bobby Moynihan/Kristin) suddenly appearing behind him on the stage. They took pictures of themselves and then got the secret service guys to join them. Then VP Biden joined them and then they interrupted Obama's speech to get him to take their group picture. It was fairly humorous but not over the top funny.

Guest host Blake Lively came out for her monologue nearly naked in a teeny weeny red strapless mini dress. WOW!!!! Her monologue dealt with her meeting some of the Muppets at the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Party. Various cast members came out dressed as Swedish Chef (Samberg), Gonzo, Fozzie Bear, Animal. Beeker, and the two hippies who play in the Muppet band. It was cute and ok.

As for the sketches---

The good:

1) ESPN Classic Superstars of Bowling (sponsored by Vagisil). The main part of the sketch is the two anchors (one of whom is clueless). The rest is window dressing. The best lines relate to Vagisil, the sponsor, from the main anchor:

"When you get a surprise between your thighs, Vagisil!"
"When dryness lingers, get some cream on those fingers. Vagisil!"
"I scream, you scream, we all scream for Vagisil cream."

Laugh out loud funny.

2) Late Night with Chris Hansen. Chris Hansen is NBC's Predator reporter. It's his new late night show modelled exactly after his predator shows. He hides as the guests come in, then surprises them, and asks them "What were you planning on doing here tonight?"; "What are you doing here?"; "What were you thinking?". Then, each guest gets tackled by the police as they try to leave.

Amusing and thumbs up.

3) The opening sketch described above. At least it wasn't just Armisen doing a poor Obama impersonation.

4) Rihanna looked and sounded fine on both of her sets.

The OK:

1) Weekend Update. Most of Seth's stories were pretty good,. But the bits within Update (Kenan as Bill Cosby promoting his new album; and, one of the ladies as flighty actress Brittany Murphy) were lame.

2) A previously seen "commercial" for Carter and Son Pulled Pork BBQ "You'll get Swine Fever"

3)CNN Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. Constantly breaking news about Tiger Woods who constantly says with wrong thing at his news conferences. His wife (played by Lively) is there and she (offscreen) constantly injures him and he keeps going to the hospital and keeps holding news conferences sporting new injuries.

4) Digital Short with Rihanna and Samberg.

The Ugly:

1) A Gossip Girl/Staten Island skit

2) Under Underground Records

3) UPS commercials "The Man in a Lady Wig" (Hader)

4) A couple of other useless skits near the end of the show.

Overall, it wasn't bad. Much better than January Jones but can't compare to Taylor Swift.

Speaking of Taylor Swift, her boyfriend Taylor Lautner hosts next week. Musical guest is Bon Jovi. They are great but I shiver to think that there will be a 'Jon Bovi' skit somewhere in the show or on Update next week.

Final observations: Blake Lively is gorgeous and likes to show alot of skin as evidenced by her monologue outfit and her goodbye outfit. Seems like Andy Samberg is becoming the Tim Meadows or the Darrell Hammond of the current crop. He doesn't show up in many sketches aside from the occasional Digital Short and those aren't live. And when he is in a sketch, it's not a major character. His part in the opening monologue was one of his longest lasting scenes lately. Also, looks like Kristin Wiig got a haircut.

Your thoughts, observations, and discussion are welcome. ;D

I didn't catch all of the show tonight, but what I caught, I enjoyed. I still haven't seen the show Taylor Swift hosted, but I thought tonight's show was the best one I've seen in a long time.

Just a note: James Franco will host with musical guest Muse on December 19, 2009.

Also: On Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 8pm ET/7pm CT/8pm PT, NBC will air a 2 hour "Christmas 2009" SNL Special show, where " 'the funniest and most festive holiday sketches from "SNL's" 35-year history are featured' ".

Pretty much agree with both posters assessments of the show - better than most of the shows of late. Sadly, that's not saying a whole lot, outside of the Justin Timberlake hosted shows + a few others in the last few years. Ditto for me re: missing the Taylor Swift show...hope to catch it on rerun or hulu.com/nbc.com soon.

I thought the UPS "dude in a wig" parodies were sardonic and quite funny. Only because whenever a commercial tries to be cool and isn't that is LOL hilarious.

The Tiger bit did make me laugh, but a little unfair to Tiger. On the other hand, when has SNL been "fair" to celebrities?

I give the 5 Dec SNL a thumbs up. Blake Lively (who?) did a much better job than January Jones or maybe Lively had better material to work with. I thought the Party Crashers were good, monologue okay.

Sketches, I have different opinions thatn WMC:
Good
  • Under-Underground Records. I thought that was one of the funniest SNL micro-skits in a long time
  • Swine Fever repeat
  • The first UPS commercial
  • Chris Hanson especially Hoffman and Reeves

OK
  • Weekend Update
  • Tiger Woods
  • Rihanna Digital Short

Bad
  • ESPN Female Bowling
  • Bill Cosby and Brittney Murphy
  • Gossip Girl Staten Island
  • NASA at the end

I'm looking forward to the Christmas special. Hopefully they'll show at least one but hopefully both the Pete Schweddy skits and Martha Stewart's topless Christmas.

Are you kidding?? That sketch had some of the loudest and longest laughs the whole night long. Keep in mind the whole thing was the two announcers and the Vagisil sponsor lines. The two women bowling was, as I said, window dressing. Easily the best sketch of the night.

Brian, looks like you get your wish from Santa. From that article: Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin will also make guest appearances on the special to help introduce clips they've appeared in as hosts, including Baldwin in "NPR's Delicious Dish and the Schweddy Balls" and Martin in "A Holiday Wish."

Why no more live blogging, because of the different time zones?

No. Radio-Info asked me not to anymore because R-I is a discussion board and not a blogging board.
