Saturday Night Live 2/18/2012

Maya Rudolph hosted, her first time since leaving the show a couple of years ago, although she has appeared in a couple of guest spots here and there.
Reasons to watch:
-The musical opening monologue with Maya singing how there was lots of hanky panky going on during her years on the show. The male members of the cast, producer Lorne Michaels, singer Paul Simon, and Bill Hader as Stefan were all there.
-The "Bronx Beat" sketch with Amy Poehler also reappearing as Maya's co-host. Justin Timberlake also appeared in this sketch.
-Amy was back later for "Really! With Seth and Amy" with Seth during Weekend Update and she then stayed for the 2nd half of Update. I particularly enjoyed this Update not just because of Amy and "Really!" but because there weren't any other stupid Update sketches.
-"What's Up With That" with Kenan Thompson with guests Bill O'Reilly and Sports Illustrated cover model Kate Upton and, of course, Bill Hader's Lindsay Buckingham.
-A game show sketch at approximately the hour mark (12:30am). The sketch itself was somewhat lame but it was one of the few times I've seen Kristen Wiig break up during a sketch. She, Maya, and Bill Hader couldn't keep straight faces. Vanessa Bayer kept a straight face.
-Maya did appear as Michelle Obama but that sketch mostly featured Fred Armisen as Barack/Bill Cosby in a parody of The Cosby Show. Amy had a quick spot at the end of that sketch as Hillary Clinton. Maya did not appear as Whitney Houston. Probably a bit too soon esp. with Whitney's funeral today.
Next week: Charlie Day and musical guest Maroon 5.

I was awake long enough to see the open song. So I guess Maya really got around, eh? Was she just passed around around like a wh$%e?

With the exception of when Betty White hosted, I personally haven't watched SNL in years. This is one viewer who just grew tired of the show.

Finally something we agree on Mark. The show just lost it's funny. The older ones (probably
pre-1990) were great and they have yet to reach that level again I.M.O.

With The Daily Show and Kimmel et all doing more immediate topical humor, and funnier too, SNL seems to have been irrelevant for years. You don't hear much about it anymore it seems.

I wasn't aware that we had any disagreements.

One thing annoying about SNL is the number of repeats they have during the year. They should have a new episode every week, atleast from September to May. There are so many writers, actors, entertainers who would work there (for low pay) to start out in career, so payroll costs shouldn't be such an issue.

Anyways, I liked the era from 10 years ago with Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. It'd be awesome if Hillary Clinton would guest star on 'Parks and Recreation' next year when she retires from work.

With Maya being recognized, I take it NBC will likely keep 'Up All Night'. They should retire 'The Office', and move 'Parks and Recreation' to 9pm.

With a schedule like
'30 Rock'
'Community'
'Parks and Recreation'
'Up All Night'

There would be atleast one SNL alum on every show for the Thursday comedy block.

That next episode is a repeat. As for when Lindsay Lohan hosts in two weeks? I won't be watching, thank you! :(

Hmmm...I just finished (and by "just finished I mean Saturday night/Sunday morning at 1:00 am) the book "1493" by Charles Mann. A couple of chapters are given over to "maroons" and it means something quite different from what most people believe. They were escaped slaves in early America who built their own autonomous settlements and often defeated armed forces brought against them. People should know more about maroons other than the Bug Bunny cartoon.

Wow, out of all that you extrapolated a "maroon" reference, which had nothing to do with anything in the original post. Nice.

Took me awhile to figure it out too. He was referencing Maroon 5 which I mentioned at the very end. They are next weeks musical guest although next week is a rerun I believe. But it was a long long way to go to do it. ;D

The last cast that I really liked was David Spade / Chris Farley / Norm Macdonald years. Later on Tracy Morgan too. Some seasons the cast members just aren't as good as others.

But he didn't even mention the all-but-tacked-on-the-end "Maroon 5," just the out-of-the-ether Bugs Bunny references to "maroons," which were either a play on words for the "maroon/escaped slaves" motif, or a play on words for "moron," take your pick about which one you want to hang on to, or a little o' both...

Worst episode of the season.

As much as i lke it, it is becoming the Kristen Wiig Show. She is in almost every sketch. Why? Don't get me wrong, she's funny, but she is becoming a modern day Cheri Oteri.
