Saturday Night NBA on ABC Launching in January

Beginning in January, ESPN on ABC will launch a new, weekly prime-time NBA series with the debut of Saturday Night NBA on ABC. The exclusive, eight-game schedule – featuring the sport’s biggest stars and most compelling matchups – will begin January 23, 2016 with weekly game telecasts at 8:30 p.m. ET. NBA Countdown – ABC’s and ESPN’s NBA pre-game show – will precede the games at 8 p.m. The announcement was made today by ESPN President John Skipper and Disney/ABC TV President Ben Sherwood. Game selections will be announced in the coming weeks.

Good move for ABC, and it'll certainly keep the affiliates happy.

EDIT: Looking at the schedule, it looks like they just took game slots that would otherwise be a part of Sunday doubleheaders, and shifted them to Saturday nights. Even still, and depending on the match-ups, there should be a slightly-larger audience that would watch.

The new TV deal with the NBA and Disney and Turner starts with the 2016-17 season, and with that ABC is suppose increase the number of regular season game telecasts to about 20, from 16 a year.

This is a good idea. Will be interested to see how it's received by fans and the numbers.

They'll be sharing the winter sports landscape with hockey, but this will undoubtedly yield higher ratings than anything else they might put in there. Not sure their target demo will be in front of the TV on Saturday night though.

Except most Nhl games on NBC air during the day. Not at nigh. Therefore this rule wouldn't apply

Cheers :)
