SAUL LEVINE AND KKGO VS. CBS AND KFRG

From today's Taylor on Radio, Saul Levine is complaining to the FCC about placing KFRG on an HD 3 signal. Previously he had complained about CBS and their ownership of too many radio stations in the market.
Does Saul really think people actually own and listen to HD Radios?

Yes he does, and there are people listening to HD radio, but the number of those with HD radios receivers appears to be very low.

Well I own two so that must half the HD radios in LA :)

But I am not sure what Sauls' complaint is (besides encroaching on his Country format). Shouldn't there also be a protest against putting San Diego 'Sophie' (103.7) on an HD channel as well. And then KUSC could protest KKGO-HD2 (also classical) for encroaching on their format. And how about CBS filing a counter protest for having Saul put 1260 (Beverly Hills) on KKGO-HD3.

The mind boggles.

Saul thinks that adding KFRG to an HD 3 signal in LA "extends its signal" but why isn't Saul complaining about Sophie (Sophie is now on 97.1 KAMP HD-2) by extending their SD signal into LA? He's paranoid about the slightest competitor for KKGO in "his" market, he wants KFRG to stay in "their" market when really they are when HD ratings rarely make an impact in the Arbs. Remember, this was the guy who tried to force the FCC to regulate satellite radio! It's cool that he's an independent broadcaster, but he needs to learn to go with the flow. One man vs. CBS Radio? It's gonna be a hard battle for him.

No HD2 or HD3 has even appeared in any Arbitron reports; web streams bounce like mad.

The FCC does regulate the satellite broadcasters... and anything else that uses the radio spectrum.

Sol makes an interesting case, since there are ownership caps in each market. Whether the FCC will see making Froggy or Sophie as having a presence in the LA market remains to be seen. But there is enough there to make you think that he just might have something... and Sol has the advantage of being the locally owned and operated broadcaster vs. the big corporation.

You may be right but going with the flow is leading to a lot of people in our society feeling frustrated and disenfranchised. Saul may well be the David in this contest against Goliath but since everyone on these boards (most anyway) feel the Clear Channel, CBS et al have ruined broadcasting we should all be cheering Mr. Levine in this pursuit.

Saul is big into HD. He has both HD-2 and HD-3 channels covering classical and standards. I think he is planning ahead to a point a few years from now when HD might become universal thanks to auto radios. At that point what is on the FM HD channels becomes significant.

BTW, Saul on the classical HD-2 channel, enough with the Beethoven Symphonies. There are other composers :)

Saul's whining to the FCC over KFRG will go as far has his last complaint to the Commission about satellite radio's being not required to adhere to the same decency standards as broadcast radio.

If Saul really wants to talk honesty how about a station whose signal is clear out in the San Fernando Valley being sold as a Market #2 station simply because the COL was changed to Beverly Hills?
