Savage booted for Dennis Miller on WNTP

Press release from Westwood One says Dennis Miller will debut on WNTP Monday from 9 p.m. to midnight. The release lists WNTP's schedule from 6 a.m. to midnight - Savage is not on the schedule.

I didn't check all the individual press releases sent out to announce Miller stations, but it appears several Salem news talkers are taking Miller.

Two thoughts:

1. I wonder how Miller likes it that Westwood has placed his show on a bunch of second-rate N/T stations owned by Salem.

2. For Savage: Ouch! I wonder if any other Philly-area station will pick him up. WILM in Wilmington carries him now from 7-10 pm, but WILM's listenable signal goes no further north at night than the Philly airport. I wonder if a suburban station will pick up Savage.

How does WNTP make ANY money? And why have they and WFIL had virtually the same management team for years? I'm glad people with Salem have job security (except Michael Savage, lol), but for crying out loud, don't they have to make money?

Or, does God have all he money he or she needs. (That's not what Pat Robertson says.)

And I'll bet Miller would be furious if he knew the "quality" of his Philadelphia clearance. However, I'm sure he doesn't get involved at that level, which is stupid but just the way things are with celebrity "talk hosts." I, for one, am waiting for The Keith Richards Show. ;)

A suburban station would be great, if their contract allows, but who has a good enough signal?

WNTP-990 picks up Dennis Miller

WNTP has issued its own release to welcome Dennis Miller. From what I can ascertain Michael Savage could be moved to overnights or off 990 AM altogether.

All of Salem's N/T stations are 100 percent right-wing. Miller's views lean to the right.

WNTP's talk lineup is 100 percent syndicated. The station makes its money off local ad sales, informercials and college sports PxP.

Why do WNTP and WFIL share management? It's called duopoly, legalized under Telecom '96.

I wasn't wondering about the same people managing both stations, I'm aware of the law. I was questioning the fact that they have remained stable for so long. I'm glad for them, but I'll never believe WFIL and WNTP make any "real" money programming the crap they have on compared to other Philly stations. (I'm not counting WPEN, or Sports Talk 950, or Sports Talk 950 WPEN or whatever their imaging is today).

WFIL makes plenty of money.

As to Miller, a clear is a clear. Considering all the right-wing shows out there, he should be kissing the ground Salem walks on for such a big launch. Westwood One, Tom Martino, or G. Gordon Liddy, all dismissed from WW1 in that daypart in the last two years or so, haven't come close to so many major and large market clearances.

Miller's Philly clear is on an 11 hour tape delay. His New York clear is only a one week experiment, also on an 11 hour tape delay. Is he being cleared live anywhere? 10a-1p ET seems like a busy time in News-Talk. Especially the third hour up against Rush and WW1's Bill O'Reilly.

Which makes me wonder if they used the same 'clearance method' as O'Rielly (confirmed by an insider friend of mine at the time BO'R(e) was cranking up syndication).

It wouldn't take much, yes, to think they're throwing cash at some of these operators for big clearances.

He'll be heard from 9 to midnight and syndicated HOMOPHOBE Michael Whinner's show now moves from 12 to 3 a.m.

It's because of arrogant comments like this that I don't like the Philly papers.

But that's not even the point. Why would WNTP put Savage, the third most listened to talk show host in America, in the middle of the night? It would make more sense to me to put either Prager or Medved on in the middle of the night and put Savage up against Hannity or Rush in order to give 1210 a little run for their cash. (Even if it is only a little run) If anyone on 990 could grab mass listeners from Hannity or Rush, it would be Savage.

Any thoughts?

I don’t think Whinner's even air’s live until 7pm eastern, 4pm Pacific.

In the old days, that was the case.

Now, Whinner's live time is 6-9 PM EST.

The reasoning for WNTP moving Savage to overnights and adding Dennis Miller from 9PM-12AM is quite simple. It goes back to Savage dropping the F-bomb on-the-air a few weeks back. It's simply a matter of CYA (cover your a**). Miller couldn't have gotten luckier for his launch than the Savage snafu. There are several stations that are going with Miller in place of Savage, or have moved Savage to make room for Miller.

Ever since the FCC got involved with the whole Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction" and has reiterated its position on fining each station who broadcasts questionable material - even if it originates with a network - many stations are being more cautious and proactive over such matters as the Savage F-bomb.

Sorry, but this is incorrect. Salem could and would have dumped Savage on ALL their stations, not just WNTP (where he's still on, and seeing that the "F" word is prohibited at all times, even 2am) should they have wished to. CC got rid of Stern in a matter of days. If Salem cared, they would have. Which makes me wonder how they go about cleaing Savage and even Miller on their "family friendly" stations while calling Neal Boortz and Glenn Beck offensive.
